  3. What Goods did they Bring back from China? Peppercorns- Have been used for centuries in medicine and cooking. Peppercorns were worth more than their weight in gold. Silk- It is used in clothing, yarns, decorative textiles, bed linens and fabric Ginger is an herb. It is used as a spice and also as a medicine. It can be used fresh, dried and powdered, or as a juice or oil. Ginger is commonly used to treat various types of “stomach problems.”

  4. What Goods Came from outside of China? Sugar- Came form India. Sugar is used to sweeten food as well as a preservative. Dyestuffs- Came from India. Natural dyes used for dying fabrics like cotton or leather. Cinnamon- Came from Sri Lanka. Besides using it in cooking, cinnamon is also thought to have health benefits. In traditional Chinese medicine, Cassia cinnamon is used for colds. Ivory- Came form Africa. Used in things like jewelry and other ornamentals pieces.
