  2. Unit Aim • The aim of this unit is for learners to develop knowledge and understanding of the importance of work ethic and how to develop their own behaviours and skills for the place of work. This unit is 30 Guided Learning Hours

  3. Unit Description Generally, people who genuinely enjoy their work would be regarded as having a better work ethic than those that don’t. A positive attitude is something that can be developed and is a behavioural choice as well as a component of emotional intelligence. It is important to understand that a positive attitude is crucial to progress in work even if you have the appropriate qualifications, experience and skills. It is also very important in terms of choice of career and direction. There is a relationship between a positive attitude to work and one’s own and the organisation’s success.

Unit Description Continued • In addition, having a positive attitude towards one’s work and towards other people “rubs off” on one’s colleagues, and everyone performs more successfully and expands their social network. • In the first part of the unit, learners consider the importance of a positive work ethic.

Unit Description Continued • Learners participate in work related projects in the second part of the unit to demonstrate behaviours and skills for a positive work ethic. • In the third part of the unit, learners assess their skills and behaviours for a positive work ethic and consider strategies to demonstrate initiative at the place of work.

Learning Outcome 1: Understand work ethic Amplification of the Learning Outcome: The importance of work ethic:to individuals eg improved performance in work, more responsibility, promotion, progress in career, self-improvement, enables achievement of goals, contributes to enjoyment of work, feeling valued; to organisations eg productivity, success of organization, development of organization, positive effect on motivation of others, encourages innovation, efficiency, effectiveness, profitability, growth and customer satisfaction

Amplification of the Learning Outcome Continued • The role of integrity within work ethic: being honest; truthful; sincerity; consistency; conscientiousness eg keeping commitments; fairness and justice; humility eg willing to learn from mistakes; gain respect from others; motivate others and valued by employers

  8. Assessment Criteria for Learning Outcome 1 Assessment Criteria: 1.1 Explain in detail the importance of a positive work ethic within the workplace Open discussion with Learners 1.2 Evaluate the role of integrity within work ethic Open discussion with Learners

Learning Outcome 2: Be able to demonstrate skills and behaviours for a positive work ethic Amplification of the Learning Outcome: Skills and behaviours for a positive work ethic: meet commitments; keep promises; demonstrate initiative; optimistic; accountability for meeting objectives;organised; admit mistakes; empathetic; collaborate; achievement drive and initiative

  10. Assessment Criteria for Learning Outcome 2 Assessment Criteria: 2.1 Demonstrate skills and behaviours for a positive work ethic in two work related activities to include: initiative collaboration accountability empathy

Learning Outcome 3: Be able to reflect on own work ethic Amplification of the Learning Outcome: Evaluate own behaviours and skills for work ethic: awareness of own strengths and weaknesses; feedback from tutor, peers, work supervisors; stages in reflection eg description (What happened?), analysis (What went well? What was less successful?) and what clarification (What needs to be done differently?) Strategies to demonstrate initiative at work: proactive eg seize opportunities; take on challenges; seek feedback; use appraisal; use a mentor; set challenging goals; collaborate with others and manage risk
