Blog 1: HeraldryAndCrests.com COATS OF ARMS THROUGH THE AGES When we think about family crest or coat of arms, we usually go back to medieval era of wars, bravery and chivalry, as these were used very often in those times. Coats of arms are sometimes named as family crests also, and they were first seen in England in the beginning of 1300s and then rapidly increased throughout Europe. The discipline of heraldry was thus recognized with all the rules and terms which were specific to the main concern. Theoretically the family crest is the section of the arms which is found on tip of the helmet. Further you would also find a family slogan depicted in the coat of arms. The first slogan was seen in 1660, though not all of them include or depict a motto. Coats of arms were put on show for various items and stuff such as shields, on banners, on tabards and of course on helmets. The term coat of arms was a resulting from the surcoat, which is a linen fabric that was worn out, over a suit of armor when a landowner, a nobleman, or a knight fought in battle. Hence the 'Surcoat' gave the term 'coat of arms'. While discussing about history it is imperative to know the current stature for coats of arms. These are very pleasing to the eye; they show the bravery of people who have achieved something on the battleground.
