Journal Impact Factor “Average citation rate per published article” (Garfield 1972, p. 476) Developed based on citation data from the fields of biochemistry and molecular biology Journal impact factor for current year= # of citations for journal cited in two preceding years/# of articles published in journal during same period Example: MIS Quarterly was cited 500 times during 2006 and 2007. The number of citable articles in MISQ = 90. Impact factor = 5.6

  3. JIF impacted by… Number of journals in a field Number of articles in a journal The frequency an average article is cited in a field Publication lags (fields with faster publication cycles get higher JIF) Turnover of knowledge accretion (History has low JIF)
