Solving Equations for a given variable Literal Equations
Vocabulary • Isolate – get the desired variable by itself • Inverse Operation – “UNDOES” the operation that is being performed on the desired variable. • Solve for – get that variable by itself on one side of the equals • CHANGE THE SIDE, CHANGE THE SIGN!!
a + 5 = 7 - 5 - 5 a = 7 – 5 = 2 a + a = t - x What would you do? Now replace the numbers with letters The answer is in terms of the other variables. ‘a’ is now written in terms of t and x. Make it real…. 5 x = t 7 -x -x
Solve ac + d = h for c ac = h – d ac = (h – d) c = (h – d) Subtract d Divide whole quantity by a Final answer A little harder… a a a
Divide by s to get rid of ( ). Add t h is dividing; therefore you must multiply whole quantity by h. Even a little harder… Solve for x + t + t ◦ h h ◦
Solve for q: • (z – t)/3 • (z+t)/3 [Default] [MC Any] [MC All]
