  10. We offer several emphasis areas: • General Planning • Health Systems Planning • Environmental Hazard Management • Urban Design and Community Development • Historic Preservation • Transportation Planning • Sustainable Urbanism

General Planning Prepares students to assist communities in the development and implementation of plans which: • Focus on comprehensive, long-range issues • Reflect the vision of the community and the region • Relate physical design proposals to community goals and social and economic policies • Create a plan that has both broad policies and technical strategies for positive change .

  12. Student planners prepared an award-winning comprehensive plan for the City of Navasota, Texas

  13. Health Systems Planning Prepares students to address issues including: • Health and disease in human populations • The delivery of health services • The operation and management of health care systems • The effect of the environment on health

  14. Planners work with emergency personnel to secure safe response times in emergency situations

  15. Environmental Hazard Management Students learn about: • Hazard/vulnerability analysis • Hazard mitigation • Preparedness for emergency response and recovery • Emergency response • Disaster recovery

  16. Planners can mitigate the damage wrought by natural disasters After disasters, cities rebuild through the efforts of planners at local, state and federal levels

Urban Design and Community Development Prepares students to find creative solutions for issues like: • Revitalizing urban neighborhoods • Increasing the supply of affordable, quality housing • Combating sprawl to improve the social and physical design of neighborhoods • Empowering residents to improve the quality of life in their neighborhoods and communities

These communities are designed to offer: Subsidized, market-rate and homeownership opportunities Social, economic and architectural diversity Vibrant, sustainable neighborhoods Access to shops, workplaces, transportation, community services Better quality of life for residents Planners and urban designers redevelop public housing to create mixed-income communities Durham, NC’s Few Gardens is being developed by The Community Builders, Inc., a non-profit urban housing developer.

Historic Preservation Planning Prepares students to: • Identify opportunities to protect and enhance our cultural resources • Implement development and financing tools to preserve historic areas and structures • Use preservation and restoration techniques to reflect our history and create a sense of place

  20. Planners preserved the historic integrity of the New Orleans’ Garden District Planners ensured that redeveloped public housing was compatible with the housing in the historic district

  21. Transportation Planning Prepares students to create transportation systems that: • Support economic vitality and quality of life • Provide multiple modes of transport • Link vital land uses • Do not contribute to environmental degradation • Function efficiently
