  3. Positivism in Design applies Positive Psychology to the design process.

  4. Positivismis a subfield of psychology that focuses on the positive.

  5. It asks and answers

  6. what works,

  7. what is good,

  8. what is functional?

  9. It does not deny the negative.

  10. It accentuates the positive and builds on it.

  11. It works.

  12. Use it.

  13. Encourage others to use it.

  14. Why?

  15. Imagine how well a team of hardworking

  16. engineers, designers, developers, & stakeholders would do

  17. if they made the design process itself

  18. HUMAN CENTERED.

  19. Our goal is to create a pleasurable experience for the user.

  20. The best way to reach that goal is to

  21. create a healthy, functional team environment

  22. for the people creating that experience.

  23. Here is how to be positive in design.

  24. Critical Thinking Criticize Evaluate Criticize Critique Criticize

  25. CRITICIZE

  26. THINK

  27. CREATE

  28. CONSTRUCT

  29. SUPPORT

  30. EXPERIMENT

  31. Name more positive aspects of a design than negative.

  32. Create metrics to measure positive aspects of a design & share them.

  33. Use more of our resources (time, energy, & money)

  34. to build new iterations of a design

  35. rather than tearing down old ones.

  36. If wered-line something in a design,

  37. we make it about the design, not the designer.

  38. Then, we must immediately offer an alternative or solution

  39. or we have to admit that we can’t, and ask for help.

  40. If we can’t, we loose the privilege of evaluating someone’s work,

  41. and we are not allowed to red-line.

  42. Try it.

  43. Apply positivism to a design for at least a minute.

  44. Maybe you can stretch that minute into an hour

  45. or an entire day!

  46. Notice what happens.

  47. It’s pretty amazing.

  48. Your mind opens up

  49. because you aren’t afraid

  50. of other people and what
