  1. Survivability AIAA Team 1 David Macdonald Taylor Raymond Result of Aircraft Survivability Failure www.aircraft-survivability.com

  2. Survivability • Aircraft Survivability: • The capability of an aircraft to avoid and withstand a hostile environment • History: • Government regulations came about after massive man and machine loss during the Vietnam War • Regulations are stricter on military issued aircrafts, but FAA rules do apply to commercial airliners

  3. Probability of Surviving • Aircraft Susceptibility (PH): • Inability for aircrafts to avoid man-made hostile environments • Aircraft Vulnerability (PKlH): • Inability for aircrafts to withstand man-made hostile environments • Aircraft Killability (PK): • PK=PH*PKlH

  4. Survivability Enhancement • PS=1-PK=1-PH*PKlH • Aircraft's combat survivability is enhanced when it's killability is reduced. • The killability of an aircraft is reduced when the susceptibility and the vulnerability of the aircraft are reduced.

  5. SusceptibilityConsiderations • Speed and Altitude • Low Signatures • Crew Training • Awareness • Ability • Maneuvering Tactics • Night Time Capability • Maneuverability/Agility • Aircraft Stability http://www.enterprisenetworksandservers.com/monthly/art.php?1659

  6. Susceptibility (Cont’d) • Self Defense/ Countermeasures • Flares • Chaffs • Signal Jamming • Fighter Escort • Threat Warning Systems http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/3a/US_Air_Force_AC-130H_Spectre.jpg http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/ac/equip/an-aar-57.jpg

  7. Vulnerability Considerations • Redundant and Separate and Redundant Flight Systems • Rugged Structure • Additional Armor • Reinforced Landing Gear Ball, Robert E. The Fundamentals of Aircraft Combat Analysis and Design. AIAA Education Series: New York. 1985.

  8. Vulnerability Cont’d • Specialized Fuel Tanks • Self Sealing • Foam Filling • Fire and Explosion Protection • Fuel Away From Inlets • Non-Flammable Hydraulic Fluid Ball, Robert E. The Fundamentals of Aircraft Combat Analysis and Design. AIAA Education Series: New York. 1985.
