  1. HSAP VOCABULARY REVIEW MATH APRIL 12

  2. EXPONENT • EXPONENT OR POWER –THE NUMBER OF TIMES A BASE NUMBER IS TO BE MULTIPLIED 34=3X3X3X3=81 4 IS THE EXPONENT • BASE-NUMBER THAT IS MULTIPLIED IN AN EXPRESSION 34 THE 3 IS THE BASE

  3. SQUARE ROOTMATRIX • SQUARE ROOT-√ (RADICAL) IS THE SYMBOL FOR SQUARE ROOT √25=5,√36=6,√64=6 • MATRIX-A RECTANGULAR ARRAY OF NUMBERS

  4. POLYNOMIAL

  5. FOIL • You use FOIL to multiply the terms inside the parenthesis in a specific order: first, outside, inside, last. Here's how to solve (4x + 6)(x + 2): • First - multiply the first term in each set of parenthesis: 4x * x = 4x2 • Outside - multiply the two terms on the outside: 4x * 2 = 8x • Inside - multiply both of the inside terms: 6 * x = 6x • Last - multiply the last term in each set of parenthesis: 6 * 2 = 12 • Now just add everything together to get 4x2 + 14x + 12. This method only works easily with two binomials. To multiply something complicated like (4x + 6)(5x - 3)(15 - x), just do FOIL on two of the binomials and then distribute the answer onto the remaining binomial.

  6. FACTOR • A NUMBER OR EXPRESSION THAT IS MULTIPLIED 3X4=12 3 AND 4 ARE FACTORS X2-4X-21=(X-7)(X+3) (X-7) AND (X+3) ARE FACTORS

  7. CARTESIAN PLANE ORIGIN-(0,0) ORDERED PAIR (X,Y) AN ORDERED PAIR IS GRAPHED BY GOING LEFT/RIGHT AND THEN UP/DOWN DIRECTION IS BY SIGN

  8. RADUIS AND DIAMETER RADIUS- A SEGMENT FROM THE CENTER OF THE CIRCLE TO A POINT ON THE CIRCLE DIAMETER- A SEGMENT WHOSE ENDPOINTS ARE ON THE CIRCLE AND IT PASSES THROUGH THE CENTER OF THE CIRCLE RADIUS IS EQUAL TO ONE HALF THE DIAMETER

  9. REFLECTION • To reflect an object means to produce its mirror image. Every reflection has a mirror line. A reflection of an "R" is a backwards "R".

  10. QUESTIONSTRUE OR FALSE • 1. IN 45, 5 IS THE EXPONENT • 2. √49=7 • 3. X2+3 IS A POLYMONIAL • 4. THE X AXIS IS THE VERTICAL AXIS • 5. IF YOU FOIL (X-3)(X+3) YOU GET X2+6 • 6. THE DAIMETER IS HALF AS LONG AS THE RADIUS • 7. A REFLECTION IS A MIRROR IMAGE

  11. ANSWERS • 1. TRUE • 2. TRUE • 3. TRUE • 4. FALSE • 5. FALSE • 6. FALSE • 7. TRUE
