  2. What is Community 101? A collaborative program started by the Oregon Community Foundation. OCF takes donations from businesses and member groups, then creates a framework by which students in schools pass that money on to local non-profit organizations.

  3. The classroom teacher applies to become a partner in the program, then the program organizer sends a binder with month by month instructions, template letters, lessons and activities and other related material.

  4. How does it work? Students are responsible for the entire process. Students research local charity organizations that meet a need they feel exists in their community My students chose to focus on mental health, for example Students create a mission statement and send out letters to these organizations, explaining that they have $5,000 dollars of community money to give away. They request a cover letter, budget information and financial statements to help make their decision.

  5. Phase 2 Non-profits fill out the application and give a detailed description of how the money would be spent if they were to receive it. Students narrow the submitted applications by reviewing financials. They can rate the agencies by percentage of income spent directly on clients, efficacy or the specific project the non-profit wants to use the money for. Students go on site visits and interview the employees of potential recipients before they make their final choice.

  6. Guidelines for non-profits Must be local organizations (United Way does not qualify, for example) The org must not be politically active OCF suggest that students select non-profits that allocate >85% of their profits to their actual community work. Some groups that my students selected:

  7. Outcomes Students feel connected to their communities Learn research skills Learn professional self-presentation (on site visits and in letters) Raises student awareness of social issues Students channel their compassion in a productive and positive manner
