  1. Does Money Make the Man? James 1:9-11

  2. Does money make the (wo)man?

  3. The Kingdom’s Great Reversal • “For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted” (Matt 23:12) • The church is to be a counter-cultural community • Our values come, not from the world, but from the Creator of the world • Our lenses, the way we see people, should be as vision from above • Worldly wisdom vs. Godly wisdom • Pandering to the worldly rich, admiring them, and wanting to live life as they do, is contrary to how God intends his children to live

  4. Riches are Temporary • Jesus taught the transitory nature of riches (Matt 6:19-21) • 1:9 Economically lowly Christians • Pride in what the Lord has done is good (Jer 9:23-24; Rom 5:2-3, 11; 1 Cor 1:31; 2 Cor 10:13-17 • Pride in what we have done is bad • True wealth is measured not in money but in faith • Who do we look up to? Who do we admire? • We who are wealthy can learn humility from those who are economically challenged by understanding the transitory nature of material wealth

  5. Warning! • 1:11 Lit. “in the middle of his travels” • Those who are in the busyness of making money are particularly prone to pride • “I work hard for my money; I deserve to enjoy it.” • The mad dash for success causes one to fade like a wildflower

  6. Application • Exceptions: There are wealthy persons who are faithful Christians and there are poor people who reject Christ • Not about commending the poor while condemning the rich • How do we who live in relative prosperity apply this? • Sell everything • Ignore it • Change our attitudes toward wealth • No one is exempt from the temptations of wealth • Do we pity poor Christians? Do we admire the world’s wealthiest people? • Remember the great reversal of the Kingdom!
