Installing the Overhead People Counter Installing the Overhead People Counter • Types of overhead • Standard the overhead with a 60° lens is used • mounting height between 2,5 meters and 4,5 meters. • Never mount below 2,5 m or above 4,5 m • 2,5 is absolute minimum(problems could be over counts, f.i. hands) • Between 2,5 and 2,8 meters you should enable the generic fragmentation software if required – this will help prevent over counting if seen • Available in 3 operation modes: • Basic/Standalone Tyco part number:2201- 0063- 02 • Master Tyco part number: 2201- 0063- 01 • Slave Tyco part number:2201- 0063- 03 • Other available types (NSL = Not in Stock Listed) special order! • Lens angle 40° mounting height is 4 – 7 meters • Lens angle 20° mounting height is 7 – 12,5 meters • To revert any unit previously upgraded back to a standard counter. Use the Downgrade_18_2_0_x_To_1_1_1_101 software, The unit type will remain the same.

Types of Firmware • Use IRISYS counter tool • This is the software tool to setup the standard firmware • Extra firmware to install only on the standard firmware  Ghost Targets/ Motion Vetting – use when false targets are created when wind blows in through the door etc.  Generic Fragmentation – use at low heights to prevent multiple targets appearing from a single person. Targets will be joined together and treated as one. • Appearing of a white spot  Target temperature is higher than floor temperature  Target is indicated as a red circle • Appearing of a black spot  Target temperature is lower than floor temperature  Target is indicated as a blue circle

Types of Firmware • Use Enhanced People Counter Software tool to Setup • In the majority of cases the standard counter can be installed correctly and configured sensibly in order to avoid the issues associated with target inversions. Therefore, in all cases it should be confirmed that the standard counter has been installed and configured correctly before attempting to use this firmware update. • As with any firmware upgrading procedure there is an element of risk involved. To minimize potential problems, only use the firmware if absolutely necessary. • The new firmware requires a new software (setup) tool in order to configure the counter once upgraded. You must install this as part of the firmware upgrade so that the counter can be re-configured. • Note that settings are lost during the firmware upgrade process so re-configuring must be done.

Types of Firmware • If you have a previous version of the ‘Tailgate Low Counter’ setup tool on your computer you must uninstall this before you can install the latest ‘Enhanced People Counter Setup’ software. • Enhanced counter firmware. • This latest firmware is specifically intended for target inversion issues. • Used when you get a loss of target when it changes from hot to cold or vice versa. This can occur when the floor temperature is not uniform across the whole area. E.g. sun light and shadow, high power spot lights shining on the ground etc

  10. General • The count lines for in and out counting are working independent. • The count lines are directional. • People do not have to cross both lines in order to generate a count increment. • Count lines can be positioned anywhere within the field of view providing that you always leave enough room for a target to be initialized before crossing the count line or it will not be counted. Keep at least 3 pixels from where the temperature change was first detected, this is usually the border of the field of view but is not necessarily; dependant on where the counter was installed and whether part of the field of view is obscured. • Overhead detects a temperature difference of 0.5 °C.

  11. General • Appearing of a white spot  Target temperature is higher than floor temperature  Target is indicated as a red circle • Appearing of a black spot  Target temperature is lower than floor temperature  Target is indicated as a blue circle • Start up counter takes 2 minutes to warm up.

  12. General • Overhead does not see wind or the air at all, it only detects infrared from material objects. It will see the temperature change of the floor that is cooled down by the wind which could generate ‘ghost targets’. • Solution: - Install the firmware for the “Ghost Targets” Standard firmware only! • Doors of glass or metal in the floor can create reflections, those will be seen as extra targets to the overhead. Solution: - Make a proper set up of the counting lines. Position the lines away from areas in the field of view where reflections are seen. (reflections will still be evident but they will not be counted) • Sun that is directly shining into the shop.  Option: Enhanced people counter.

  13. Target • It is the centre point of a persons target that must cross the count line in the correct direction for that line.

  14. Mounting the overhead • Install the overhead over areas where people flow freely – avoid queues and areas where people stop or wait. • The overhead needs a clear view of the area beneath so position away from obstacles and signage hanging underneath. • Be sure the (entrance) heater or air conditioning unit is not blowing directly at the overhead • Watch that there are no air-conditioning / ventilation units nearby that can generate vibration on the overhead. Do not mount directly on to any source of vibration. • Although the counter can be mounted anywhere between 2.5m absolute minimum to 4.5m (8.2-14.8 ft), the optimum height for best performance is 3.5 – 3.7m (11.5 ft). • Do not mount the counter where high-power spotlights or sunlit hot spots fall within the field-of-view if possible. Avoid these with careful line placements. • Do not mount the counter where floor materials change temperature rapidly, such as carpet over tiles and rubber mats under direct sunlight if possible

  15. Mounting the overhead • Install the overhead horizontal on sealing, if not possible use a bracket • Installing on soft ceiling - use brackets

  16. Mounting the overhead • The counter should be mounted so the directional arrow on the mounting bracket faces the direction that traffic will be counted “OUT”, usually towards the doorway being covered.

  17. Mounting the overhead • Although it is acceptable to install the counter directly over a doorway with the optional wall mount bracket, for optimum performance the counter should be installed away from the doorway, approximately one third to one half the distance of its coverage area (a counter mounted at 3.5m (11.5 ft) has roughly a 3m (10 ft) coverage area, so the counter should be mounted 0.9m to 1.4m (3-5 ft) from the doorway. Ensure the doorway is just within the counter’s field of view (at the edge)

  19. Array Recorder (Data Capture Tool) • If you observe strange effects in the counters field of view then you should use this software tool to record the effects for later • In case of problems tech support will ask you to use this tool.

  20. Configure the counter • The count lines on the configurator screen should always be positioned for the best performance in that location; there are very few instances when the default settings will give optimum performance. The lines should be shaped (normally in a “U” shape) so they count people coming in and out, avoid natural traffic patterns of customers already in the store, and so there are at least 3 pixels between the count lines and the edge of the field of view. • Count line setting for a typical installation:

  21. Configure the counter • The count lines can, and normally should overlap each other. This will prevent ‘cross-walkers’ from generating extra single IN or OUT counts, instead they will generate an extra IN and an extra OUT – net result zero. • When verifying operation and adjusting count lines, walk to and from merchandise near the doorway to emulate natural customer traffic patterns. Adjust the count lines so this normal customer traffic within the store is not counted, while leaving at least 3 pixels around the lines for targets to be acquired. If impossible to avoid this then ensure that both. the IN and OUT count lines are positioned directly on top of each other so that any cross traffic will generate a corresponding IN count and OUT count which will give a net result of zero, as mentioned above. • Ensure the LED and Relay settings are correct, and Pulse Width for both count lines is 100ms. • Ensure heart beat function is disabled. • During initial setup, and after any changes, settings should be made permanent (by clicking “permanent” within the properties option). • Also save settings file to your laptop by selecting Save from the Properties menu. In case of problems, tech support will ask you for this file.

  22. Single Sensor Doors Settings • Turn Relays on • Set Pulse width to 100ms • For the ultralink ini file set the pulse width to 80ms. • Ensure the heartbeat is turned off. • The correct height of the counter is entered in meters • If the counter is mounted above 3,5 – 4 meters, de installer has to decide if it is necessary to activate Couple counting, above 4 meters Couple-couinting may need to be enabled always walk to test the system. • For the extreme weather configuration (Using the standard firmware) See TIB112SRM08 Rev.2 Overhead People counting application resolutions.

  23. Selecting wide opening(Using master and 1 to 3 slave overheads • Wide opening networks are used when a single counter will not have a large enough Field Of View to count the whole area. • Left one is the master • A Master counter adds the counts together from all the counters on a wide opening network and outputs the counts as if a single counter • Note: this is easier to configure with standard firmware as the setup is automatic based on the height and separation you enter as part of the setup procedure. With the enhanced firmware overlap and line positioning must be done manually.

  24. Selecting wide opening(Using master and 1 to 3 slave overheads • For a correct relation between the height and the detection region see the dotted line in the Counter Mounting Height. • Counters can be mounted closer together than indicated by dotted line – but not further apart (required if ceiling furniture is in the way – lighting, sprinklers, smoke detectors etc).

  25. Selecting wide opening(Using master and 1 to 3 slave overheads • To see the overlap area connect both overheads to the notebook. • Unit can ID can only be 1 – 4. For master it is 1. • Once all the units are configured, made permanent and settings saved; reboot all units, wait for two minute warm up period and verify everything working ok. I.e. no LED error flashes from any of the units, etc. • If configuring more than two units, connect to units 1 and 2, then 2 and 3, then 3 and 4, etc.

  26. Enhanced Counter Firmware Instructions • To allow partners to utilise the latest ‘Enhanced counter’ firmware this is designed to perform better in environments which exhibit differing floor temperatures within the field of view of the counter. These differing floor temperatures can sometimes lead to under counting issues with the standard counter firmware.

  27. Before using the Enhanced Counter Firmware In the majority of cases the standard counter can be installed correctly and configured sensibly in order to avoid the issues associated with target inversions. Therefore, in all cases it should be confirmed that the standard counter has been installed and configured correctly before attempting to use this firmware update. It should be noted that sunlight heating up the floor immediately underneath the counter could be a contributing factor and as such the problem may be more pronounced at different times of the day. This latest firmware is specifically intended for target inversion issues. The array output from the counter should be observed to ensure that this is indeed the issue shown and that it is not something completely unrelated. If you do not know how to recognise a target inversion from viewing the array output then you should not proceed any further. Instead you should contact your technical support department for guidance and if necessary request an experienced engineer attend site. As with any firmware upgrading procedure there is an element of risk involved. To minimise potential problems, only use the firmware if absolutely necessary. Always ensure that you have a solid serial connection between the counter and your laptop, and never attempt to stop the upgrade or disconnect the counter once the upgrade procedure has begun. Ensure that you are using the correct firmware up grader for the connected counter type (single relay only counter, master counter or slave counter) and firmware type. Attempting to run the firmware up grader for a different counter type than specified will fail with an error message.

  28. Firmware Versions • The different firmwares up graders are sorted by their folder names: • Upgrade_1_1_1_101_To_18_2_0_570 (basic relay) – This is to upgrade a basic relay counter to the latest firmware. The part number of a basic relay counter is IRC1004-0. • Upgrade_1_1_1_101_To_18_2_0_570 (can node) – This is to upgrade a CAN unit counter (or slave) to the latest firmware. The part number of a CAN node is IRC1004-1. • Upgrade_1_1_1_101_To_18_2_0_570 (relay master) – This is to upgrade a Relay master unit to the latest firmware. The part number of a relay master is IRC1004-2. • Downgrade_18_2_0_x_To_1_1_1_101 – This is to revert any unit previously upgraded back to a standard counter. The unit type will remain the same. • Note: if units have previously been upgraded to earlier firmwares (such as 18.2.0.527, 18.2.0.532, 18.2.0.16397, 18.2.0.562, etc) then you should use the downgrader, and then the relevant upgrader, in order to utilise the very latest firmware. • Note: CAN masters (IRC1004-3) are not supported in this version of the firmware.

  29. New Enhanced People Counter Setup software • The new firmware requires a new setup tool in order to configure the counter once upgraded. You must install this as part of the firmware upgrade so that the counter can be re-configured. • Note that settings are lost during the firmware upgrade process so re-configuring must be done. • If you have a previous version of the ‘Tailgate Low Counter’ setup tool on your computer you may have to uninstall this before you can install the latest ‘Enhanced People Counter Setup’ software. • See also the relevant section below on how to use the ‘Enhanced People Counter Setup’ software.

  30. How to check the current firmware version • To check the firmware version already in use, you need to load the setup software and interrogate the unit. Unfortunately you must use the correct setup software for the relevant firmware - which you may not know. So, it is suggested that you try to connect using the standard setup software first and if this fails you should then attempt to connect to the unit using the Enhanced setup software. If both software versions fail to connect to the unit then you should check that the unit is powered, and also that the serial cable is connected correctly. If using a USB to serial adapter then this too should be verified by connecting to a known good unit. • To check the current firmware in the standard ‘People Counter SetupTool’ select the ‘Properties’ window and the ‘Info’ tab

  31. How to check the current firmware version • If you have any firmware version other than 1.1.1.101, then contact your support department for advice. • To check the firmware version using the ‘Enhanced People Counter Tool’ select ‘About Tailgatesetup…’ from the ‘Help’ menu: • The firmwares that you may see are as follows: • 18.2.0.570 – The very latest firmware for Target inversion. • 18.2.0.527 – Older ‘Low sensitivity’ firmware for Target Inversion. • 18.2.0.532 – Older ‘High sensitivity’ firmware for Target Inversion. • 18.2.0.16397 – Older ‘Normal sensitivity’ firmware for Target Inversion. • 18.2.0.550 – Older ‘Normal sensitivity’ firmware for Target Inversion.

  32. Make changes to the counter. • To make changes to the counter configuration select ‘Adjust Detector Settings’ from the ‘Device’ menu, see below. • Once the counter is configured as required you must select the ‘Make Changes Permanent’ option from the ‘Device’ menu. Also counter settings should be saved using the ‘Save Settings’ option from the ‘File’ menu. Saved line settings are required when seeking technical support. • In the Detector Settings window you can set the CAN ID, the mounting height and configure the relay pulse outputs: • Set Relay pulse duration to 100 ms!

  33. Make changes to the counter. • Regardless of unit type, you must enter a valid CAN ID of between 1 to 30. You can also enter a description string if required. • The mounting height must be set in centimetres to the nearest centimetre. This is very important. • For Relay output ‘Pulse Duration’ there are now more options available then in the standard people counter variant. Set as required for your interfacing purposes. • By default the ‘Invert Relays’ tick box will be checked. This enables the same relay output as the standard firmware, i.e. high going low for each count increment. By un-checking this box it is possible to have the relays the other way around, i.e. low going high. • Leave checked for correct Ultralink interfacing.

  34. Make changes to the counter. • By default the ‘Enable LEDs’ tick box will be checked. When checked the LEDs will briefly flash for every relevant line crossing. This can be disabled if required by un-checking this box. • For details of ‘Retrospective Counts’ option. See TIB112SRM08 Rev.2 Overhead People counting application resolutions. • ‘Retrospective Counts’ option. This is enabled by default and configures the line counting (line logic) to be similar to the standard people counter. In some cases it may be preferable to disable this setting to allow for different line settings which permit more initialisation but without counting people moving through the counting area (cross traffic). • Once all the settings are entered hit the ‘Upload’ button to set the changes Once the counter is configured as required you must select the ‘Make Changes Permanent’ option from the ‘Device’ menu. It is also recommended that counter settings are saved using the ‘Save Settings’ option from the ‘File’ menu.

  35. Make changes to the counter. • Sensitivity Slider. • The sensitivity slider does not change the sensitivity of the actual array material; it changes the sensitivity with respect to the linking of targets. • By keeping the sensitivity low there is more chance that the counter will be able to handle the target inversion that you would normally get with the standard firmware. Effectively the ‘momentum’ of the target is tracked regardless of whether the person is seen as a hot or a cold target. • If the sensitivity is too low, it is possible for the counter to detect only one person in the field of view when there are actually two people walking next to each other. In this case you would slowly increase the sensitivity so that the differentiation of people is improved. Note that by increasing the sensitivity the performance associated with target inversion will be reduced. The sensitivity slider should be positioned so that a balance is achieved between; performance with target inversion, and multiple people walking through the field of view.

  36. Make changes to the counter. • Sensitivity Slider. • Note that the couple counting option is no longer available in the latest firmware and setup software. Couple counting is now automatically determined on a case by case basis, derived from the thermal signal being seen and the sensitivity slider position. This means that the array view may show only one target but this target could be counted as two people. By adjusting the sensitivity slider you can affect this outcome – lower sensitivity to decrease the chance of the counter couple counting; raise the sensitivity to increase the chance.

  37. Make changes to the counter. • Once all the settings are entered hit the ‘Upload’ button to set the changes. Once the counter is configured as required you must select the ‘Make Changes Permanent’ option from the ‘Device’ menu. It is also recommended that counter settings are saved using the ‘Save Settings’ option from the ‘File’ menu.

  38. Wide openinig network support • Firmware version 18.2.0.570 now also includes support for wide opening networks incorporating Relay masters (part number IRC1004-2). CAN masters are not supported (IRC1004-3). • Counters must be positioned as per previous guidelines using the People Counter Mounting Height Graph document (document number IPU40106), ensuring adequate overlap and full coverage of the entrance/exit. • Count lines must then be configured manually by viewing the array output in the ‘Enhanced People Counter Setup’ software. There are no overlap regions to configure or separation distances to enter. Because of this it may be more complex aligning the count lines between counters and it is therefore recommended that a laptop with two COM ports is used running two copies of the Enhanced People Counter setup software connected to two separate counters at once. In this way it will be more apparent where the ends of the count lines should be. • When configuring a wide opening network ensure that every unit as a unique and valid CAN ID configured. • Ensure each unit is configured and the settings made permanent before moving on to the next.

  39. Wide openinig network support • It is very important to reboot the master unit once the wide opening network is completely installed and configured. For this reason it is recommended that the slaves are configured first and the master is configured last of all. This is so that it will correctly identify the new settings from its connected slaves. Failure to reboot the master will result in no count increments and no relay pulses from the master. • The master counter will show the total counts from the wide opening network separately: • Once the master is configured correctly, reboot the master and verify correct counting by walking across each of the counters count lines. Note that there may be a small delay between crossing a count line on a slave and the master generating the count increment and relay pulse. • If there are any CAN network errors on the wide opening network then you will see one or more units flashing their LEDs, together, to indicate a problem. This will repeat once a second until the problem is corrected. Possible problems are; a unit on a wide opening network has the same CAN ID as another unit, or a wiring fault. • If a master loses connection to one or more of its slaves, during operation, then it will stop counting and no relay pulses will be output in order to alert the ‘data logger’ to a problem.

Summary of issues found during Field Service Investigations: • Lens cover issue, lenses in the field with the wrong inserts preventing accurate counting • Labels / prints on the door • Reflection lens cover when emitter and receiver are mounted on one pedestal (split installations). • Unplugged devices from router or power supply • Setup Ultra link, Time zone, IP Address • Reversed in an out counting • Use of promotion panels. • The height of the pedestals prevents smaller people to be counted. • Maximum width for the counting with traffic flow is 2.4 meters.

Summary of issues found during Field Service Investigations: • Lens cover issue, lenses in the field with the wrong inserts preventing accurate counting. • Check the counting numbers, if there are inaccuracies, remove the cover. • When the system counts good, replace the covers with correct lenses spare part # SP0404-0386-01.

  44. Summary of issues found during Field Service Investigations: 2. Labels / prints on the door Labels or prints on a glass door can influence the counting. When the door turns inside the shop the label or print prevents persons that walk through from being counted.

  45. Summary of issues found during Field Service Investigations: 3. Reflection lens cover when emitter and receiver are mounted on one pedestal. When several zones are set up at one bigger entrance, it is possible that in one pedestal the right side is the emitter and the left side is the transceiver. When the cover is mounted the receiver can receive signal from the emitter on the same pedestal because of the reflection of the counter. Then people will not be counted. Check it by removing the cover. To solve the problem for instance with 3 pedestals, install the receivers in the left and the right pedestal. For the pedestal in the middle install only the emitters.

  46. Summary of issues found during Field Service Investigations: 4. Unplugged devices from router or power supply When there are no counts received check the connections. Is the ultralink connected to the power supply? Is the ultralink connected to the router, ping server?

  47. Summary of issues found during Field Service Investigations: 5. Setup Ultra link, Time zone, IP Address Check LDM or Ultralink, is the IP correct, correct Time zone, count zone correct? 6. Reversed in an out counting Check if the in and out counts are equal to the in and out movement. 7. Use of promotion panels. Be aware of promotion panels that can influence counting

  48. Summary of issues found during Field Service Investigations: 8. The height of the pedestals prevents smaller people to be counted. Because the sensors are aligned at approximately the top of the head, it is possible that smaller people are not counted or only in or only out 9. Maximum width for the counting with traffic flow is 2.4 meters. The maximum width of the pedestals is 2.4 meter. If the entrance/exit is bigger, the system is not accurate.
