Roanoke Colony, settled in 1586 by Sir Walter Raleigh, was the first English attempt at permanent settlement in the New World. Initially, 107 men were sent to establish the colony, and later, a second ship arrived late with 115 additional settlers, including women and children. John White was appointed as governor, and Virginia Dare became the first English child born in America. However, when White returned to the colony in 1590 after seeking supplies in England, he found it mysteriously abandoned, with no trace of its inhabitants.
