  2. Agenda • Why move to a Longer School Day? • What is the vision for 2012-13? • What is the district’s planning process? • What do we want to see at our school?

  3. Our goal is to provide all children with a world class education… every child Ensure that -- in every school and every neighborhood -- college and career ready graduates

  4. …unfortunately, we are far from meeting that goal Current challenge • 123,000 students are in underperforming schools • Only 57.5% of high school students graduate • Only 7.9% of high school juniors met all four college readiness benchmarks • Average ACT score of 17.2 (Below college admissions benchmark of 21) • Meanwhile, just 17.1% of elementary students exceeded state standards on the ISAT

  5. To move forward, we need to end the shortest day & year in the nation Our students receive 22% less instructional time than the national average Source: National Council on Teacher Quality (http://www.nctq.org/tr3/reports/custom.jsp?id=29850) Based on current teacher union contracts

  6. With a Longer School Day, we can give students the time they need A Longer School Day gives students the time to: core academic subjects, Deepen knowledge of especially as we implement more rigorous Common Core standards enrichment opportunities, Broaden including physical education, art, music, etc. interventions Provide student with individualized so every students receive the support they need when they need it college and career prep (For high schools) Increase opportunities

  7. Our plan for next year is to lengthen the school day Beginning in August 2012, we plan on providing elementary students with a 7.5 hour student day This would place our students on par with the national average for number of minutes in the classroom. Please also note that while this is the district’s plan, it is subject to final approval by the Board of Education.

  8. Schools will have freedom to redesign their day for their specific student body • Elementary School parameters: • Students will be in school for 7.5 hours and receive 6.5 hours of instruction(Increase of 1hr 45mins to the school day and 1hr 30mins for instruction) • Students will receive a 45-minute recess/lunch period • Teachers will receive a 45-minute duty-free lunch • Teachers will receive a 60-minute prep period(One of five preps per week will be principal-directed teacher collaboration) • Within these parameters, schools will have the flexibility to redesign their day to meet the unique needs of their student body, with input from the community, parents, students, and school staff Please also note that while this is the district’s plan, it is subject to final approval by the Board of Education.
