  2. What is a Blizzard? • For 3+ hours: • Sustained winds or frequent gusts • at least 35mph or greater • Falling and/or blowing snow • reduced visibility ¼ of a mile or less • Blizzard vs. Snowstorm

  3. How do Blizzards Form? 3 requirements: 1. Cold air at the surface 2. Moisture in the atmosphere 3. Rising warm air

  4. 2011 Groundhog Day Blizzard • January 31st- February 2nd, 2011 • Storm of “historic proportions” • New Mexico and Northern Texas  New England and Eastern Canada • Cold dry air from Canada clashing with warm moist air from the Gulf • 21 states reported snowfall of 5+ inches
