WHAT`S GOING ON The famous groundhog Punxsutawney Phil, may have claimed to not see his shadow, but it seems that Spring is never coming to the U.S. A monster snowstorm hit in late January, 2011, leaving 2 feet of snow across the third of the country. Roads were closed, many schools were shut. The storm is one of the worst in decades. Homes lost power. Tons of people were rescued from their cars that were covered in snowdrifts. “A storm like this is very rare. A storm that produced a swath of 20 inch snow is something we see every 50 years, maybe” Thomas Spriggs, a meteorologist said.   3. WHO`S IT EFFECTING The deep snow, inches of ice, and gusting winds are leaving the U.S. at a standstill. Airportpassengers had to stay at least one night in the terminals. Roads closed, cars were covered in snow. It left many people stranded in there homes. Roofs of houses collapsed, many survived, but few were not as lucky. Ice also put many people in hospitals.   4. Who`s Taking Actions The snow storm had many people take actions good and bad. Many people helped others (see picture), but some criminals stole stranded cars. A state ofemergency was called in many states, including Illinois, Oklahoma, and Missouri.   5. THE DAMAGE The snow storm caused great damage around North America. Many places had too much snow on roofs causing them to collapse (see picture on right). The cost of repair sums up to $4 billion! It will take weeks to clear all the damage. For the damage of New York alone will cost about $700 million.
