Exploring the Literacy Standards: Inference

This resource delves into literacy standards focusing on inference, particularly R.2 and R.1, which emphasize determining central ideas and drawing logical conclusions from texts. Educators are encouraged to employ graphic organizers like KLI, Making Inferences Chart, and Predict and Infer to enhance student comprehension and support EOG testing preparation. The session aims to share successes and challenges in teaching these concepts, highlighting the importance of citing textual evidence in conclusions. Participants are invited to reflect on key takeaways from the discussions and implement strategies in their classrooms.

  1. Exploring the Literacy Standards: Inference

  2. Review • R.2 Determine central ideas or themes of a text and analyze their development; summarize the key supporting details and ideas. • What graphic organizer(s) did you try with students? • What successes or challenges did you experience?

  3. Focus Standard • R.1 Read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences from it; cite specific textual evidence when writing or speaking to support conclusions drawn from the text.

  4. Focus Standard • KNOW + LEARN = INFERENCE • Inference = Guess, Prediction, Conclusion • Teach students to use “infer” and “inference” to prepare for EOG testing • MUST cite evidence!

  5. Focus Standard The Empty Revolver By Richard Brautigan “It’s hard to live in a studio apartment in San Jose with a man who’s learning to play the violin.” That’s what she told the police when she handed them the empty revolver.

  6. Graphic Organizers Inference • KLI* • Making Inferences • Making Inferences Chart* • Predict and Infer* • Reading Between the Lines • Text & Subtext*

  7. Assignment • Assign at least one of the graphic organizers to students. • May or may not ask students to write a paragraph as a result of the graphic organizer. • Bring stories of successes or challenges to the next meeting/workshop.

  8. Review • What is the nugget from the first session (R.2)? • What is the nugget from today’s session (R.1)?
