  2. An “Insight” is a remarkable realization that you could leverage to better respond to a design challenge. Insights often grow from contradictions (both from within a single user or from within the system) or from asking yourself “Why?” when you notice strange behavior. Insights are unexpected and only surface after digging into the challenge through empathy. Sample insights from flight passenger: move freely & at own pace willing to signal special cases thinks he knows better amused by process

  3. Share out notes from your interviews (20) as a group keep two columns - what insights did you gather about people and what insights did you gather about the system? Sort out what’s striking (10) consider the shared interviews of your group :: where are there contradictions or rich areas to design for? 3-4 > Make “How might we…” statements (15) building on thinking about what you want to leverage and what you want to design away, make a number of HMW statements to load your brainstorm :: these HMW statements will be based on your insights Share your HMW list with another group from your district (10) 6-8 <

  4. Share out notes from your interviews. (20 min) As a group keep two columns : what insights did you gather about people, what insights did you gather about the system? 3-4 >

  5. Sort out what’s striking. (10 min) Consider the shared interviews of your group. Where are there contradictions or rich areas to design for? Which attributes or elements within the insights do you want to leverage (i.e. teacher enthusiasm)? Which do you want to design away (i.e. lack of consistency in assessment across the system)? 3-4 >

  6. Make “How might we…” statements (HMW) (15 min) building on thinking about what you want to leverage and what you want to design away, make a number of HMW statements to load your brainstorm :: these HMW statements will be based on your insights How might we help... Insights… travel vicariously through others make time go by faster for feel respected by co-workers explain to others when tired of it better navigate the airport travels vicariously through others long processes make time go by doesn’t feel respected tired of explaining to others wheelchairs solve other needs 3-4 >

  7. share your HMW list with the other group from your district (10) give and get enough understanding of the language to be able to brainstorm together after lunch 6-8 <

  8. After lunch tee-up

  9. THIS TIME WE… WILL BUILD ON WHAT WE DID LAST TIME WILL DO THE AIRPORT SECURITY CHALLENGE – FOCUS ON DESIGNING FOR THE USER WHILE HAVING THE SYSTEM IN MIND WILL BE MINDFUL OF PROCESS AS WE APPLY DESIGN THINKING TO OUR CHALLENGES: -FOCUS V FLARE -PROTOTYPING LAST TIME WE… DID THE MECHANIC CHALLENGE – INTRO TO HUMAN-CENTERED PROCESS EXPERIENCED DESIGN THINKING MINDSETS APPLIED DESIGN THINKING TO OUR CHALLENGES

  10. Prototyping reminders:carry multiple ideas forwardremember kinds and purposes of prototypesincrease resolution as idea advances

  11. Overview of afternoon:Brainstorm (30)follow the brainstorming rules, paying attention to energy :: when energy dies pick a new “How might we…” promptSelect (5)each person gets three votes :: follow the voting criteria :: narrow to 2-4 ideas to carry forwardPrototype sketches (15)decide who is advancing which idea (should be multiple people on each idea) :: each person individually sketches multiple versions of the idea he/she is advancing Iterate within group (25)share sketches with people who sketched the same idea :: build on each other’s ideas :: each person has new sketches to share with the room at the end of this timeJigsaw (30)Each individual gets feedback on sketches to bring back to his/her group :: use feedback grid 6-8 < 6-8 > 1 >< 3-4 >< 100 >

  12. Brainstorm (30)follow the brainstorming rules, paying attention to energy :: when energy dies pick a new “How might we…” prompt FIRST FIVE CHALLENGE: only offer ideas that are specific and silly 6-8 <

  13. Select (5)each person gets three votes :: follow the voting criteria :: narrow to 2-4 ideas to carry forward Use contrasting selection criteria to preserve innovation potential 6-8 >

  14. Prototype sketches (15)decide who is advancing which idea (should be multiple people on each idea) :: each person individually sketches multiple versions of the idea he/she is advancing I’m interested in pushing this idea along. I want to advance this idea. I’ll sketch a couple of versions of what it might look like! 1 ><

  15. Iterate within group (25)share sketches with people who sketched the same idea :: build on each other’s ideas :: each person has new sketches to share with the room at the end of this time 3-4 ><

  16. Jigsaw (30)Each individual gets feedback on sketches to bring back to his/her group :: use feedback grid ? 100 >
