  2. My Definition of Teaching • The art of defining and communicating the basic knowledge, skills and mental models necessary to understand, evaluate, discuss and create/ compose within a specific discipline (e.g. history, biology, accounting, marketing, music, etc.).

  3. Course and Lesson Planning • Determine your role as an instructor, coach, facilitator, or learning director. • Set the objectives at the level of the course. • Define the key knowledge, skills and mental models. • Select appropriate learning methodologies. • Formulate fair assessments. • Communicate at every stage of the course.

  4. The FIRST Session • Introduce yourself. • Learn names. • Prepare a lively/interactive first session. • Define key external learning resources. • Demonstrate your command of the discipline. • Develop supporting materials ahead of each class, and act as a learning partner. • Make clear your policies for: • attendance: see Academic Catalog & define expectations. • involvement – specify how this will be assessed. • late assignments (does lateness disqualify assignment?). • academic dishonesty (see later slide). • use of cell phones/laptops in class.

  11. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY • Cheating during examinations. • Collusion on out-of-class assignments. • Plagiarism – copying from other students, downloading from the Internet. FULL-TIME FACULTY ADVISORS AND ADMINISTRATORS SHOULD BE INFORMED AND LEFT TO HANDLE THESE ISSUES. • Students should be reported to the Dean, so that recording system can work. Grading and Feedback • If you are grading assigned work…give it back next session. • Develop a grading plan for each assignment to ensure consistency and fairness. • Don’t feel you have to grade everything! • Show how to apply the theories from class. • Deal with unhappy students in private on a one-to-one basis. • Try to make comments, notes and corrections in a positive way. • Be honest about poor or incomplete work. • Final Grades – do not email grades before you have posted them to Access Maryville.

Grading Scheme (100 point scale) • Notes on Final Grades • D is earned credit, but not for required courses in the major. • Graduate Only: Limited number of C grades in graduate work. • I – Incomplete: allowed for unforeseen life challenges only. • DG – Graduate course not completed due to exceptional circumstances • AF – Failing due to excessive absences. • NE – Not eligible, used when I or DG time has expired –no effect on GPA. • W – Student withdrew from course, no effect on GPA • Pass/ Fail (No Pass) – Limited use non-major courses (instructor authorized)
