  1. Illicit Synthesis of Methamphetamineand what EPA can do to assistCurtis Kimbel, RRT, 19 April 2011

  2. Common Methods of Production • “Nazi” Method, a.k.a. “Birch Reduction” Method • Commonly used in rural areas and mobile labs • “Biker” Method, a.k.a. “Amalgam” or “P2P” Method • More advanced chemistry and lower efficiency • “Red White & Blue” Method, a.k.a. “Red P” Method • Most common method in U.S.

  3. Nazi Method • Chemical Precursors: • Ephedrine or Pseudoephedrine • Anhydrous Ammonia • Reaction Catalysts and Byproducts: • Acid Gas Generators (HCl & H2SO4) • Lithium or Sodium Metal • Hazards: • Water Reactive Metals • Ammonia – Flammable/Asphyxiant Gas and Cryogenic Liquid • Corrosive and Flammable Gasses • Anhydrous Ammonia Pressurized Cylinders

  4. Biker Method • Chemical Precursors: • Phenylacetic Acid  Toluene and Acetic Acid • PhenylacetonePhenylacetic Acid and Lead(IV) acetate • Methylamine • Reaction Catalysts and Byproducts: • Acid Gas Generators (HCl & H2SO4) • HgCl2 and Al  Mercury-Aluminum Amalgam • Alternatively - Platinum Dioxide Catalyst • Hazards: • Flammable Solvents and Corrosive Liquids • Corrosive and Flammable Gasses • Methylamine Pressurized Cylinders • Mobile and Reactive Toxic Metals

  5. Red White & Blue Method • Chemical Precursors: • Ephedrine or Pseudoephedrine • Red Phosphorus • I2 + H2O  Hydriodic Acid • Reaction Catalysts and Byproducts: • Acid Gas Generators (HCl & H2SO4) • Hazards: • Phosphorus Reactivity – Air/Water Reactive • Explosive and Flammable Gasses • Phosphine Gas (PH3) • Iodine Vapors

  6. Methamphetamine Chemical Sources • alcohol (Isopropyl or rubbing) • toluene(brake cleaner) • ether (engine starter) • sulfuric acid (drain cleaner) • red phosphorus (matches/road flares) • salt (tablet/rock) • iodine (test dip or flakes/crystal) • lithium (batteries) • trichloroethane(gun scrubber) • MSM (dietary supplement) • sodium metal • methyl alcohol(gasoline additive) • muriatic acid (pool chemicals) • anhydrous ammonia (farm fertilizer) • sodium hydroxide(lye) • pseudo ephedrine(cold tablets) • ephedrine(cold tablets) • acetone (nail polish/paint remover)

  7. Ephedrine

  8. Lithium

  9. Anhydrous Ammonia

  10. Phosphorus

  11. Breaking Bad & Other Links • Red White & Blue Lab Setup – AMCtv “Breaking Bad” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=icm2UscmEdU • EPA Voluntary Guidelines for Meth Lab Cleanup http://www.epa.gov/oem/meth_lab_guidelines.pdf

  12. Summary • Remove chemicals from building • Segregate chemicals • EPA can pick up and dispose of chemicals • Status of future DEA funding?
