Purpose and Goals • The Oil Pollution Act reduced and prevented oil spills off the coast of the United States by expanding the governments ability of control, and increasing the money available to the federal government for large spills. • The Act states that companies are required to have an effective plan to prevent oil spills within their vessels, and to have a well planned cleanup solution. • This Act also incorporated the Oil Spill Liability Trust Fund, which authorized the government 1 billion dollars to pay to remove damages from an oil spill. • The federal government is responsible for regulating this.
