  3. Language Structures: • The nominal clause used as • the subject complement introduced by that--- • e.g.: The fact was that John Brown had a car accident. • the subject complement introduced by wh-word--- • e.g.: The scissors are not what I need.

  4. The nominal clause used as • the appositive--- • e.g.: Have you heard the news that all English students will have to pass a proficiency test before they can graduate. • the subject introduced by what--- • e.g.: What I told him was that I would find him a good play.

  5. Homework • Keep the structures in mind and speak them out spontaneously. • Exercise on P12 in the Workbook.

  6. Dialogue I • Broad questions: • What do students usually do on Friday evening? • What do you usually do on Friday evening? • what are stand-ins in a play? • What will happen if a performance is a flop? What is the best way to avoid a flop? • Try to retell the dialogue

  7. Language points : • 1).put on: put on a show/play/film • put on clothes/coat/suit

  8. 2). “What about…? • If someone doesn’t like sea food, you may change something for him and say “what about meat then?”

  9. 3). “Do/ don’t count …in” • You are a good player, why don’t you take part in the table tennis match? Oh, don’t count me in, I get nervous so easily.

  16. Role –play: • Divide the whole class into 5 or 6 groups ,discuss the following situation given and then report. • Learn dialogue II and practice the following : • Listen to reading I and answer some questions : • Learn reading II and point out the main idea.

  17. Make sentences using these words: • mime: n. v. I couldn’t speak Chinese but I showed it in mime that I wanted a drink. • The doctor was miming the movement of a bird. • punch: n. v. I’d like to give that man a punch on the nose. • He punched the man on the nose/in the chest. • delay: n. v. Do it without delay. We decided to delay our holiday until next month. Our plane delayed by fog.

There was a serious crash this morning. • September 11 crash was made by terrorists. • The car crashed into the tree and burst into flames • The plane crashed shortly after take-off. • risk: n. v. at the risk of one’s life , risk doing something • Group work: discuss “ A friend in Need Is a Friend Indeed” • Practice all the exercises in Workbook

  19. Dialogue Ⅱ • 1. Pair work: • Strike up a conversation with your partner, taking it in turns to invite each other to some place. Accept or refuse the invitation politely, give an excuse for refusing, and suggest an alternative day/ time.

  20. 2. Self-study Dialogue II • Comprehensive questions: • 1) What is Joan doing to do this weekend? • 2) What is Joan going to do next weekend? • 3. Make up dialogues by using cues given in Practice on P18. • 4. Pair work: Talk with each other about your weekend plans.

Reading I • 1) Who are stuntmen and what do they do? • 2) What has to be done to make stunts look real on the screen? • 3) How are bullet holes formed in action scenes? • 4) How can an actor crash through a door or window without getting hurt? • 5) How are explosion scenes filmed? • 6) What measures have to be taken to protect the life of a stuntman? • 7) What types of stunts have been forbidden in today’s film production? • 8) What is expected of an all-rounder?

Language Points • Relevant expressions: • stunt, action scene, stuntman, film the screen, mime fights, punch, sound effects, fall off a horse, tumble down a staircase, drill a hole, air rifle, crash through, dynamite, trampoline, bounce up into the air, wear asbestos suits, ban some stunts, gallop, throw oneself off, biplane, boxing, judo, karate, wrestling, acrobat, risk one’s life

  23. 1) mime • n. an act or the practice of using actions without language to show meaning • I couldn’t speak Chinese but I showed it in mime that I wanted a drink. • v. to act in mime. • The actor was miming the movement of a bird.

  24. 2). punch • v. to strike sb./sth. hard with the fist. • He punched the man on the nose/in the chest. • n. (punch in, on) a quick strong blow made with the fist(=closed hand) • a straight punch to the jaw 打在下巴上的直拳 • punch ball or punching bag(练习拳击用的)皮吊球,皮吊袋 • I’d like to give that man a punch on the nose.

  25. 3). crash • v. to (cause to ) have a sudden, violent, and noisy accident • The car crashed into the tree and burst into flames • The plane crashed shortly after take-off. • n. a violent vehicle accident • There was a serious car/train/plane crash this morning. • September 11 crash was made by terrorists.

  26. 4). tumble: • v. to fall suddenly or helplessly; roll over or down quickly or violently • The little boy tripped and tumbled down the stairs. 小男孩绊了一下, 从楼梯上滚了下去。 • Stock market prices tumbled(=fell sharply)after rumours of a rise in interest rates. • 由于谣传利率上升, 股票市场价格猛跌。 • v. to fall to pieces, fall down • The hut we built is already tumbling down. • .我们盖的棚屋已摇摇欲坠。 • n. He’s taken a few tumbles recently.

  27. 5). gallop • to (cause to) move at the speed of running horse • The horse/rider galloped down the hill. • He galloped through his work so that he could leave the office early.

Reading Ⅱ • 1) Why do many people all over the world watch soap operas on TV? • 2) What is the difference between cheap soap operas and soap operas with big • stars and produced at high costs? • 3) How many main types of characters are there in soap operas? • What are they? Describe each of them. • 4) Do the retelling according to the exercise in the WB.
