WHERE WE WORK Programs are offered in Ghana, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama • Countries selected based on: • Large need in rural areas • Strong community partnerships • Logistically feasible • Safe for volunteers • Global Brigades addresses • basic needs related to: • Healthcare, Water & Sanitation • Economics • Environment • Human Rights • Infrastructure

  6. IMPACT What can students accomplish in one week?

ARCHITECTURE MISSION We collaborate with rural communities in Honduras to alleviate needs in health and education infrastructure through design and hands-on construction projects. • What can YOU do? • For every 1 volunteer, 1.4 children receive access to higher education. • For every 300 volunteers, an entire school can be built. • For every $50, 20% of a classroom wall can be built.

ARCHITECTURE THE BRIGADE • Work side by side with community members to construct a project that is student designed with input from the community. • Take part in various aspects of construction: from digging and pouring foundations to constructing steel reinforcement structure, from laying concrete blocks for walls to framing woodwork and roof trusses • Lead activities related to creative design and construction for the local school children.

BUSINESS MISSION We empower rural communities in Panama, without access to financial services and business guidance, to become more economically stable by providing micro-enterprise consulting, financial planning assistance and strategic investment.  • What can YOU do? • For each team of 5 volunteers, 4 families will receive individual financial planning workshops. • One team of 5 volunteers will allow 2 entrepreneurs or micro-enterprises to receive business consulting. • For every volunteer a $100 loan to a micro-enterprise that could yield up to 2 to 3 times the return for the entrepreneur is made.

BUSINESS THE BRIGADE • Conduct household visits to get to know the family, assess each household’s level of financial competency and entrepreneurial aspirations.  • Provide educational and technical assistance in the form of workshops.  • Invest in the community savings and loan cooperative by providing seed capital.  • Work side-by-side with entrepreneurs on business planning and operations and consult small businesses

  11. DENTAL MISSION We provide immediate, restorative and preventative dental services in rural communities without access to oral care otherwise. Our current focus is in Ghana, Honduras and Panama. • What can YOU do? • For every 1 dental unit, 563 fillings are performed to restore teeth. • For every 1 week-long brigade, 51 extractions are performed to relieve pain caused by dental cavities. • For every 1 volunteer, 3.5 children receive a fluoride treatment to help protect and make their teeth stronger.

DENTAL THE BRIGADE • Work alongside a licensed dental professional and have a very interactive role with the patients. • Supple sterilization, assist the dentist it tooth extractions, fillings and cleanings, • Provide post-op care and have the opportunity to participate in children’s education.

ENVIRONMENTAL MISSION We empower rural communities in Panama to reverse degradation and preserve their environment through reforestation, sustainable agriculture, waste management and education programs • What can YOU do? • For every 1 volunteer, 100 trees are planted, offsetting 4,000 lbs of CO2 per year • For every 1 volunteer, Land productivity is increased by 4,500 lbs per year per hectare • For every 1 volunteer, waste is decreased by 219 lbs per year per household

ENVIRONMENTAL THE BRIGADE • Conduct household visits to get to know the family, assess their environmental impact and work alongside community member to implement the following: • Plant native tree species to mimic the biodiversity and nutrients cycling as in a healthy ecosystem, especially on the families’ farm land • Utilize to organic fertilizers and natural pesticides to diversify the number and placement of agricultural plants to benefit soil nutrients and minimize erosion • Educate community members on the hazards of waste burning and the benefits of creating compost as well as other diversion methods

HUMAN RIGHTS MISSION We empower rural communities in Panama with limited to no access to legal resources with the professional guidance and education to resolve their civil and property disputes. • What can YOU do? • For every 4 volunteers, one family secures their property of land • For every 1 week-long brigade, 50+ community member receive legal capacity building workshops • For every 1 volunteer, 1 community member has access to legal justice

HUMAN RIGHTS THE BRIGADE • Coordinate pro-bono legal clinics where individuals from various communities seek legal guidance • Work together with lawyers to provide solutions for any legal issues • Provide individual legal consults, go through the land titling process with each household and issue contracts, and help complete any legal paperwork in land titling process • Administer legal capacity building workshops that cover various legal concepts and empower communities by increasing their level of legal knowledge

  17. MEDICAL MISSION We work with licensed medical professionals and community health workers to provide comprehensive health services in rural communities with limited access to health care. Our current focus is in Honduras, Ghana, and Panama. • What can YOU do? • For every one volunteer, 24 patients are given access to essential medical care. • For every one volunteer, nearly 2 pap smears or prostate exams are given. • For every $63 raised, one patient gains access to a doctor and essential medications.

  18. MEDICAL THE BRIGADE • Take patient vitals, obtain patient history, shadow and assist licensed physicians , participate in preventative education, and fill prescriptions under a licensed pharmacist. • Become familiar with the prevalent health issues in their community and learn about how to prevent and treat those illnesses. • Make a tangible impact in a specific community while gaining real life experience in the field of international medicine.

  19. MICROFINANCE MISSION We provide rural community members in Honduras and Ghana a community banking system , with access to loans, financial literacy programs, and education to increase production and foster a culture of savings and growth. • What can YOU do? • For every 1 volunteer, 1 farmer’s agricultural production is doubled. • For every 1 volunteer, $30 in interest is generated for community reinvestment. • For every 1 volunteer, 9 savings accounts are opened.

  20. MICROFINANCE THE BRIGADE • Volunteers will have the opportunity to visit community members in their homes and develop an understanding of each family’s economic situation. • By the end of the week, the volunteers are able to determine how they want to allocate their $100 community investment funds depending on the need of the community. • Build Policy, Build Ability and Build Leaders

PUBLIC HEALTH MISSION We empower rural Honduran communities to prevent common illnesses through in-home infrastructural development, community leader training, and health education. • What can YOU do? • For every 1 volunteer, one water storage pilacan be built. • For every 1 volunteer, one eco-stove can be built. • For every 15 volunteers, 2 families can benefit from health infrastructure projects.

PUBLIC HEALTH THE BRIGADE • Work side-by-side with community members in individual homes, building eco-stoves, latrines, water storage pilas, showers and laying concrete floors. • Work directly with the community-led Basic Sanitation Committee to prepare a health education workshop taught in the local schools. • Make a tangible and sustainable impact on the health of the community.

WATER MISSION We empower community members to access sufficient clean water through infrastructural development, water treatment, community leader training and education. • What can YOU do? • For every 1 volunteer, 3.9 Honduran community members with access to clean sufficient water • For every 1 volunteer, 36 children gain access to clean drinking water during the school year in Ghana

WATER THE BRIGADE • Work side-by-side with community members to implement a water system. • Work directly with the community-led Basic Sanitation Committee to prepare a water and health education workshop taught in the local schools. • Make a tangible and sustainable impact on the knowledge of the community
