  3. Family Meetings Esi, 19 years old, lives next to Abinawith her 9 month old daughter Elizabeth . sayHer daughter has cleft lip. Shemoves around selling ground cassava. She travels to Mankessim every month and buys one big bag of gharri for 200 cedis and then sells it making 20 cedis profit. She uses this money for food, for the baby, about 2 cedis for cell phone each week, and about 5 cedis a month for electricity. Her mother owns the house so she does not have to pay. Her husband is a driver and gives her 5 cedis every two days. She says she was born in this community but her 4 brothers and sisters live in Cape Coast with her mother. According to her it is too expensive to live in Cape Coast. She took classes until she was in 6th grade but because she was often late due to her responsibilities around the house she was punished and eventually this deterred her from going. She wants to go back to school as she was always good at math but school is expensive. Her goal is to go to school to learn to be a seamstress at trade school in Mankessim where she already has relatives so she will not have to pay for housing. According to a local seamstress it would cost 500 cedis to train as well as 1 Fanta crate and 1 Malt crate. She already has a sewing machine and she says she will have to talk to her mom about possibly helping out with the cost. The problem is that she also wants to spend her money for her daughter’s surgery to fix her cleft lip. We were able to get an estimate of 3000 cedis without health insurance, however, Esi has health insurance and so we are unsure of the cost. Picture Removed For Privacy
