  4. More Vasco da Gama… • First Voyage was in 1479. - 2 ships were lost. - 55 people returned. • Second Voyage was in 1502. - 4th Portuguese Armada with 15 boats & 800 men.

  5. More 2nd Voyage info • Tried to expel Muslims from Calicut. • Bombarded the city Calicut and destroyed several houses. • Captured ships carrying rice and tortured the crew’s by cutting off their ears, noses, and hands. • Burned boat full of wealthy Muslim merchants.

  6. Third Voyage • 1519 became first count of Vidigueira. • Earned a reputation as the “Fixer”, because of fixing India’s problems. • Intentions for 3rd voyage was to replace Eduardo de Menezes as viceroy of Portugese possessions.

  7. More info • His first adventure was to seize French ships in retaliation for French peacetime plundering against Portuguese shipping.

  8. His first Voyage was to go to India to open a sea route to Asia, and outflank the Muslims. With 4 ships.

  9. Why was his journey important? • His voyages to India opened a sea route, from western Europe to the east, by way of the Cape of Good Hope, which enabled others to head to India.

  10. More • On Nov. 25th he ordered the store ship to be broken up • When they docked at Mozambique the people they were Muslims so they let them live.
