  1. Eye-opening, Captivating, and Compelling Mathematics! Judy Spicer

  2. These are the best of times in mathematics. We can make visible ideas that previously were hard to model and visualize ideas that were impossible to imagine.

  3. "Teachers should use technology to enhance their students learning opportunities by selecting or creating mathematical tasks that take advantage of what technology can do efficiently and well- graphing, visualizing and computing" Technology Principle of NCTM Principles and Standards of School Mathematics: (NCTM, 2000, p. 25).

  4. This is an example of a visualization not possible in any other format. Hypercube

  5. Technology "blurs some of the artificial separations among some topics in algebra, geometry and data analysis by allowing students to use ideas from one area of mathematics to better understand another area of mathematics" (NCTM, 2000, p. 26) Center for Technology Education

  6. What makes a good interactive learning activity? • What are some examples of Web-based activities that you like? Dislike? • Let's begin by visiting NCTM's Illuminations site and exploring Understanding Distance, Speed, and Time Relationships Using Simulation Software • Visit ENC Online and search their database of over 20,000 curriculum resources for teaching math and science grades K to 12.

  7. Let's begin by visiting NCTM's Illuminations site and exploring Understanding Distance, Speed, and Time Relationships Using Simulation Software

  8. Visit ENC Online and search their database of over 20,000 curriculum resources for teaching math and science grades K to 12

  9. Next we will examine six web sites and examine what makes the interactive materials useful.#1 Learning Connection

  10. # 2 ExploreMath.com • System of two quadratic inequalities • Parabola with horizontal directrix

  11. # 3 JAVA Sketchpad DR3 Gallery • Sine Wave Geometry

  12. # 4 Math Cove Pythagorean Theorem The applet tiles a deficient 2n by 2n grid using right trominos. It can introduce the principle of mathematical induction.http://www.utc.edu/~cpmawata/instructor/tsukuba8.htm

  13. # 5 Dave’s Short Trig Course This is an example of successful integration of online activities with traditional mathematics content.

  14. # 6 Manipula math with JAVA • Linear Function and Graph • Pythagorean theorem • Pythagoras tree • The Sum of Outer Angles of a Polygon

  15. The virtual handout for this discussion is available at http://www.enc.org/conferences/spicerwebfeats.htm
