  1. Welcome to Math Curriculum Night Teacher: Ms. White, Gr 4

  2. What is Math Mathematics reveals hidden patterns that understand the world around us. Duke University Math is about solving problems. Montana University The science of numbers and their operations, interrelations, combinations, generalizations, and abstractions and of space configurations and their structure, measurement, transformations, and generalizations. The Merriam-Webster dictionary

  3. Who Uses Math • Everybody uses math whether they realize it or not. • When people cook, shop, travel, build, fix things, and even play games, they use math. • In every job people use some math. Many jobs require lots of math, like doctors, cooks, scientists, construction workers, architects, the military, and more.

  4. Gr 4 Math Standards • Operations and Algebraic Thinking • Use the four operations with whole numbers to solve problems. • Gain familiarity with factors and multiples. • Generate and analyze patterns. • Number and Operations in Base Ten • Generalize place value understanding for multi-digit whole numbers. • Use place value understanding and properties of operations to perform multi-digit arithmetic. • Number and Operations—Fractions • Extend understanding of fraction equivalence and ordering. • Build fractions from unit fractions by applying and extending previous understandings of operations on whole numbers. • Understand decimal notation for fractions, and compare decimal fractions. • Measurement and Data • Solve problems involving measurement and conversion of measurements from a larger unit to a smaller unit. • Represent and interpret data. • Geometric measurement: understand concepts of angle and measure angles. • Geometry • Draw and identify lines and angles, and classify shapes by properties of their lines and angles.

  5. Vmath live and study island • www.vmathlive.com • Vmath Live is a program for kids to practice their math skills by working through modules. Students can earn tokens and then use their tokens to compete and play games in a Game Center. • www.studyisland.com • Study Island is an instructional and diagnostic tool that helps students master the state standards and prepare for their state tests. Students can access Study Island from any computer that is connected to the Internet. See the tour www.studyisland.com/tour • Keep in mind, the more students use Vmath Live, Study Island, and any other Math program, the better they will understand the material.

  6. Sample Problems based on Standards http://www.ncpublicschools.org/accountability/testing/eog/sampleitems/newcurmath4 • Operations and Algebraic Thinking • Number and Operations in Base Ten • Number and Operations—Fractions • Measurement and Data • Geometry
