  1. Hydrocarbons

  2. What is a Hydrocarbon? • Organic compound- contains only hydrogen and carbon • Saturated and Unsaturated • The more carbons in a Compound, the stronger and more powerful it is

  3. Types of Hydrocarbons saturated unsaturated Contain one or more double or triple bond Three types: alkenes, alkynes, aromatic hydrocarbons • All of the bonds are single • Contains the maximum number of hydrogen atoms for carbon • Also known as alkane

  4. Straight Chains • Molecular formula shows the type of atom and the amount in a compound • Structural Formula = arrangements of these atoms

  5. Branched Chains • Isomers: compounds with the same molecular formula, but different structural formulas

  6. Rings

  7. Alkenes • Hydrocarbons that have one + carbon to carbon double bond • Names of compounds in this group end in –ene • Example: Plastics used in trash bags and milk jugs

  8. Alkynes • Have one or more triple bonds • Straight or Branched Chain • Most reactive Hydrocarbon Compounds • Name ends in –yne

  9. Naming Hydrocarbons

  10. Quiz • On a separate piece of paper draw structural formula for the following, provide the prefix name as well:1. C3H82. C5H123. C4H10 4. C2H25. C6H66. Why can carbon from 4 bonds?7. What are 3 forms of carbon?
