Ilias Atwani Shares His Knowledge of Traditional Life and Social Organization in Inuit Culture Ilias Atwani life so far has been loaded with several rewarding experiences including a trip to the Inuit villages as a reward for winning The Art of Mining photography contest. In addition to having the pleasure of knowing about the rich heritage of the Inuit culture, Ilias also had the opportunity of spending time with Noah, the local guide and his family who taught him a lot about the traditional life and social organization in their culture. As explained by Ilias Atwani, Noah and his family lived in one of the many small communities numbering several households. He was astonished by the fact that an Inuk might encounter a few hundred people in his lifetime, and how most of these would be relatives of one kind or another. Watching Noah’s wife look after a girl while her mother was out working was also quite overwhelming for Ilias. Earlier, walking used to be the most common form of transport, most Inuit use snowmobiles to travel on the land these days. Ilias got a chance to experience this when Noah took him and the second-place winner on a snowmobile expedition. Talking of his personal life, Ilias Atwani has worked in several responsible positions for a couple of reputed firms. At one of these leading mining firms, Ilias worked in several different roles including that of an intern in the mining engineering department, mining junior engineer, mining engineer, and underground mines supervisor.
