  1. Managing & Tracking Premium Information within End-User Communities KM World October 30, 2001 Peter Simon VP Strategic Development

  2. Who Is DigitalOwl? DigitalOwl enables premium information providers and corporations to securely license, promote, distribute and manage their valuable information within their end-user communities.

  3. DigitalOwl Securely Fulfills and Tracks Usage of Premium Business Information • Content that requires prevention from mass distribution • Analyst and Market Research Reports • Expensive, niche industry journals • Informational eBooks (texts, self-help, how-to, training) • Content for which usage tracking & reporting is required • Offline tracking for business information database vendors • Market data within the financial industry • Internal content considered to be highly confidential • M&A or IPO document flows • R&D, patent work or internally published confidential information • Highly-directed client, partner, or employee information

  4. External Information Publisher Problem Statements: • Publishers cannot show ROI to their corporate clients because they cannot easily track and meter usage within clients’ intranets, portals and end-user communities • Publishers are looking to better track the flow of their premium information through their channels and through their clients’ channels. Tasini case has expedited this need • Publishers are being asked by their corporate clients to provide new and flexible licensing models • pay-per-use, time-based licensing, team-based licensing • End-users cannot find publishers’ information within corporate intranets – too many passwords, lack of seamless integration within portals and KM initiatives • 43% of employees share content within their peer groups without license verification • Publishers and knowledge managers have no way of knowing how pass-along patterns occur once content is local to an end-user

  5. Corporate Problem Statements for External Content Integration: • End-user usage statistics are critical for ROI of external information purchase decisions • On average, corporate end-users spend 14% of their time searching through external information sources. Need to integrate external sources into KM initiatives to reduce this time • Looking for highly flexible payment and licensing terms based on actual usage instead of on potential usage. Also looking to minimize vendor sources due to content overlap between vendors. • Global companies have a need to support small groups of users in lots of sites around the world. These are different “sites” that providers want to charge a “site” license for in each case, even if only a few users per site. • Corporate end-users go to the Internet 70% of the time. Internet sources are only validated 18% of the time, and are, on average, 3 months out of date (Forrester). Concerned with usage of relevant data for business decisions. • Want minimization or elimination of dependencies on passwords and IP addresses for access

  6. Proprietary Internal Information Problem Statements: • Content and document management companies are focused on creation and workflow aspects of information. Access protections are usually limited to ACLs and passwords to content repositories which cannot manage content upon its download to a user’s desktop or PDA • Concern over ability to manage and control highly confidential documents within collaborative workgroups such as M&A teams or drug research teams as they are utilized offline • Need for secured distribution as well as detailed tracking of usage and pass-along flow of valuable corporate information within partners, clients, and service providers • Knowledge managers are keenly interested in better understanding the usage and pass-along metrics for internally generated information in order to optimize future information creation initiatives that meet the needs of corporate users • Urgent need to combine these valuable internal information resources with external information sources into a single, personalized flow to end users’ desktops while ensuring both sources are managed, controlled and tracked

  7. DigitalOwl Solves Critical Issues in the Corporate Premium Information Market • Managed control of premium information flows through channels, clients, partners, and end-users • Detailed knowledge of client, partner, and employee information usage that enables ROI validation • Flexible, automated management of licensing, pass-along controls and usage models • Personalization of information interests and delivery preferences onto end-user’s desktop • Content control on desktops, PDA and wireless devices • Recommendation and collaboration on information within peer groups while licenses remain intact

  8. KineticEdge™ Application Suite • Fulfillment Service • License models - permanent, timeout • Delivery models – frequency or download • Payment models – Credit Cards, POs, Membership ID • User Desktop/PDA Information Usage Activity Reporting • Information Professional Reports • Report configuration on who gets to see reporting information • Supported filters – date, information source, group, user, content package/collection, peer ranking, title, time opened • Pass-along and group collaboration activity details • Information Provider/Publisher reports • Previews & Downloads by: corporation, group, user, date, peer ranking • Login frequency by: corporation, group, user, date • For retail, detailed purchasing reports

  9. KineticEdge™ Application Suite (continued) • Collection Management • Creation and management of custom content collections based on end-users’ privileges, preferences and membership groupings • Membership Management • Accounts, departments, individuals and other member groupings • Ties groups and users to specific information collections based on available licenses, need to know and preferences • Intelligent Catalog Management • Customized end-user and group catalog views based on their privileges • Manages reviews and recommendations for protected information items • Integration with portals, content mgmt environments, taxonomy classifications, and internal information catalogs

  10. TitleVision™ - End Users are the Key • Integration with content/document management systems as well as portals • One-click access to premium information sources, both external and internal with automated authorization as items are attempted to be downloaded • Desktop and PDA-based Bookshelf/Content Organization • Preferences/personalization management • Device Management (PDA, Wireless Devices) • Download Management (when, where from, how) • Local Content Navigation (search, parsing, bookmarking)

  11. Case Study – Large Insurance Corporation • Client Scenario: • Lots of internal publishing of sigma information, competitive rate information, etc using Documentum. Not sure what items are really useful and which can be eliminated • Use a proprietary system based on Lotus Notes to expose internally confidential information to partners and clients – expensive to maintain and not flexible • Have over 50 sources of externally licensed information that they want to expose as available within their recent corporate portal launch using Plumtree • Problems: • Need to control and track the usage of internally published data as it is distributed both internally and externally to partners and clients to determine what is useful • Need a turnkey, flexible solution to automate the flow of confidential information to both internal and external users • Want to integrate external, licensed information sources into Plumtree portal environment while ensuring compliance with licensing agreements

  12. Case Study – Large Insurance Corporation • How DigitalOwl Solves these Issues: • Tracking Internally Published Materials – Upon a user’s request for an item from the Documentum repository, KineticEdge is able to prepare content for tracking and fulfill the content in “real-time” to the user’s desktop or PDA device. Once downloaded, the content usage is tracked as it is utilized and passed along. • Managing Content Flow to Partners and Clients – KineticEdge was specifically designed to automate the connections between information collections, license pools and authorized memberships of all forms of premium and confidential information. Content flow and usage will be tracked and metered even after it has been downloaded to outside partners and clients. • Integration of Licensed External Information Sources into Portal – Again, KineticEdge was specifically designed to manage content license pools within corporate environments, and to selectively expose available, licensed content to licensed, relevant users within a corporate intranet or portal.

  13. Case Study – Premium Business Information Provider • Client Scenario: • For over 20 years, has licensed information as “per seat” with access control being either a password or IP address range. Until recently, was successful in negotiating this way, but corporations now only want to pay for what they actually use • Tracking of information flow through channels and within corporate clients is becoming critical due to the recent Tasini vs NY Times ruling by Supreme Court • Competitive and economic pressures are forcing a proactive engagement with new channels and technology partners • Problems: • Licensing revenue is declining quickly due to corporate clients’ requirement to prove an ROI on any information investments. Also competing against the Internet as a perceived source of “free” information • Current information repository is very large, and is based on over 20 years of legacy technology. As such will be difficult to quickly be able to redesign to incorporate offline tracking per item as required in the new ruling • Channel management was done by written contracts and honor system in the past. The scope of the problem now requires automation of management of content flow

  14. Case Study – Premium Business Information Provider • How DigitalOwl Solves these Issues: • Generation of ROI Analysis – KineticEdge is able to track and report in real-time all content usage for information providers’ content within their corporate clients, thus automating the process of ROI analysis • Integration of Legacy Repositories – KineticEdge does not require information providers to change their current systems. Instead, content dynamically flows through KineticEdge after being requested by an end-user and is prepared for automated tracking and fulfillment at that time. • Automated Channel Management – KineticEdge is able to automate the management of content flow through license channels and to end-users of those channels. Content flow and usage will be tracked and metered even after it has been downloaded to the end-users of 3rd parties. The information provider has access to usage data in real-time for invoicing purposes.
