  2. Getting Ready: Last Year of Library School First, Imagine Your Best Workplace, Where you Can Grow and Contribute • Prepare a plan • Network, Network, Network! • Volunteer/Join Professional Organizations • Find out about hiring processes • Last but not least: Prepare for rejection!

The Transition: From Graduation to Library Job • Have a support system in place: Family, Friends, Mentors • Prepare, Quit, and Commit • Spread your wings and Believe in Yourself • Accept part-time jobs : they can lead to other opportunities • First Impressions: Be Professional Whatever you do, don’t give up!

  4. Cruising Altitude: Got the Job but Now What? Reflect and Ask Yourself these Important Questions: • How do I fit within this organization? • Is there opportunities to grow? • Am I making a contribution? • How is your alma y corazón?

Academic Library CareerBefore you Begin! • Take an academic course in library school if possible • Intern or volunteer at an academic library • Before you interview read: • The library’s program review to get a deeper understanding of the organization • The campus’s accreditation self-study report • The Mission/Goals and Strategic Plan for the library and the campus.

  6. Academic Library On the Job Tips • Be active in library committees to learn how the library functions • Join campus committees to contribute to your campus. Campus faculty will better understand librarian contributions • Get to know your departments, and the research and teaching interests of faculty • Become a member of ACRL or Loex. Subscribe to listservs on teaching and academic collection development

  7. Progressing in Your Academic Library Career • Find a mentor at your library, on your campus or through a library association • Explore your research and writing interests. Find colleagues in and out of your library with similar interests to create opportunities to publish • Create a Professional Development Plan (PDP). Update yearly with new goals for professional development.
