  2. The Elementary Library Media Specialists Are Unified Arts Teachers • Weekly 45-minute classes, one per classroom, total 48 (24 each) this year • Story time, reading guidance, library skills, information literacy, classroom curricular projects, iSafe, media literacy, more

  3. Library/Media class is important for all students “The more often students receive library/ information literacy instruction from library media specialists, the higher the test scores.” –Information Empowered: The School Librarian as an Agent of Academic Achievement in Alaska Schools

  4. Next year’s plan? With 1.6 library media specialists at the elementary school, as proposed for next year, there will be 40 class slots. Some students will not have a library/ media class every week.

  5. Elementary Library Media Specialists Also “Run the Library” • Working with the library assistant, this is much like a high school librarian’s role • Enables the school library media center to be available for students, staff, and teachers on an ‘as-needed basis’ throughout the day.

  6. We Run the Library … • Circulate materials • Maintain collection to meet curricular and general reading and information needs • Maintain the room and its resources as an efficient, pleasing learning space • Support individual users – students, staff, faculty – in using library resources • Provide assistance with technology within the library media center • Assist classes visiting with their teacher

At MES, this means: • Circulation – 21,013 this year, as of 1/26 • daily average Sept. to Dec. – 231 • today: 385 • Student visits – individuals on passes, throughout the school day, as needed • 1,315 in December, daily average of 82 • Extra class visits, with teacher, over 100 per month • Daily average in December 6.6

  8. Extra Classes and Passes? • In many schools, this does not happen if the library media specialist is busy with a full schedule of classes • We’ve chosen to provide flexible scheduling inaddition to weekly class visits because it is so important for student learning • In an ideal situation, a librarian would be available to work with the extra classes.

  9. Why do we do both scheduled classes and flexible access? “Flexible scheduling is one of the hallmarks of a fully realized school library. For schools to benefit as much as possible from strong libraries, access to them needs to be as flexible as possible, enabling teachers and students to work with the library media specialist and other staff and use the library as a classroom or study space as needed.” – Powerful Libraries Make Powerful Learners: The Illinois Study

More Evidence From More States • “At elementary schools with the highest Michigan Educational Assessment Program reading scores, teachers and students are 4 times as likely to be able to visit the library on a flexibly scheduled basis, compared to their counterparts at the lowest scoring schools.” – The Impact of Michigan School Libraries on Academic Achievement: Kids Who Have Libraries Succeed • “The relationship between school library program development and test scores is not explained away by other school or community conditions at the elementary or middle school levels or by other school conditions at the high school level.” – Good Schools Have School Librarians: Oregon School Librarians Collaborate to Improve Academic Achievement
