  1. The Bible • Revelation: occurred when God gave His truth • Inspiration: occurred when the Biblical writers received and recorded His truth • Illumination: occurs when we understand His truth and apply it to our lives • It’s the application that’s vital

  2. Majoring on Jesus

  3. “The Way” • Jesus is The Way • Early believers – the People of The Way • Lost your way • Don’t know the way • By the way • Lead the way • Way to go • What a way to go • Any way will do

  4. Philippians 2:5-11 (NIV) • “Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus, who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death, even death on a cross! Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

  5. Five reasons Jesus came to earth • 1. To represent God the Father • Jesus – The Word (John 1:1) • Jesus – The Light (John 1:3) • Jesus – The Life (John 1:3) • Immanuel – “God is with us” (Matthew 1:23) • 2. To demonstrate God’s power • Miracles and healings (Acts 2:22) • Full of the Holy Spirit (Luke 4:1) • “For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him” (Colossians 1:19) “Jesus answered, ‘I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him’” – John 14:6-7 (NIVUK)

  6. Five reasons Jesus came to earth • 3. To provide for our salvation • Jesus – “because He will save His people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21) • “And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Saviour of the world” (1John 4:14) • “And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12) • “God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life, but whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life” (1John 5:11-12) “The gospel tells us that our Creator has become our Redeemer’” J.I. Packer – “Knowing God”

  7. Five reasons Jesus came to earth • 4. To set up God’s Kingdom on earth • “From that time on Jesus began to preach, ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near”’(Matthew 4:17) • The Kingdom of God | Heaven- Matthew: 30 references - Mark: 14- Luke: 32 - John: 2 • Sermon on the Mount – Matthew 5-7 • “Come to Me” “Follow Me” “Believe in Me” “Obey Me”

  8. Five reasons Jesus came to earth • 5. To fulfil the ultimate plan of God • “And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am’(John 14:3) • Release the Holy Spirit “However, I am telling you nothing but the truth when I say it is profitable (good, expedient, advantageous) for you that I go away. Because if I do not go away, the Comforter (Counsellor, Helper, Advocate, Intercessor, Strengthener, Standby) will not come to you [into close fellowship with you]; but if I go away, I will send Him to you [to be in close fellowship with you]. And when He comes, He will convict and convince the world and bring demonstration to it about sin and about righteousness (uprightness of heart and right standing with God) and about judgment”John 16:7-8 (Amplified Bible)

  9. Our picture of Jesus • We have a choice to make • “Christianity is a statement, which if false, is of no importance, and if true, of infinite importance. The one thing it cannot be is moderately important’ – C.S. Lewis
