  1. Centennial High School School Wide Literacy Plan 2009-2010

  2. I. Objective The following plan was designed by the 2008-2009 Literacy Committee. Two staff members from each department met monthly to discuss and implement new reading and writing strategies. The goal was to decide which strategies would be most effective and easily implemented school wide. The plan was presented to the entire staff during the first quarter 2009-2010.

  3. The proposed plan covers three objectives for student learning: 1. Develop rhetorical reading skills through text annotation. • Increase student understanding and application of academic vocabulary in core content areas. • Adopt summary writing strategies to improve students’ ability in organization, coherence, and sentence clarity.

  4. A. Reading Strategy: Text Annotation A format was provided to the staff to help model skill building during reading exercises and note taking. -Circle headings and titles -Box key vocabulary -Underline main ideas -Highlight confusion

  5. B. Vocabulary Strategy: Academic Word Wall Teachers encouraged to develop “Word Walls” in class, focusing on academic vocabulary and concepts. -can be used as warm-ups -use as weekly assessments -designed collaboratively by each department.

  6. C. Writing Strategy: Summary Writing 6 Types of Frames: -Narrative -Topic Restrictive -Definition -Argumentation -Problem Solving -Conversation Application *Cornell Notes *Quick Writes *Incorporate Vocabulary *Use KHSD 4 Point Rubric to assess. *English classes to continue EPT Rubric

  7. D. School Wide Norms Adopted • Silent Sustained Reading • Explicit Direct Instruction • SLANT • Bell-to-Bell Instruction • SMART Goals • Commitment to PLC’s • Use of Common Formative Assessments in all Subjects

Based on the College Access Study conducted during the 2009-10 school year,the following areas have been identifiedas areas of needed growth and development: • Intervention Task Force to support “at risk students” • Increase college culture on campus through activities and staff participation. • Use of Cornell Notes in all discipline areas.

  9. Conclusion The current Literacy Plan incorporates powerful teaching strategies and promotes critical thinking among our students. The methods can be assessed, monitored, and generate real data essential in meeting the needs of students.
