  5. New technology includes: • Computers • Machines that help businesses produce high-quality goods and services rapidly and efficiently. • Businesses must: • Train employees to work with new technology. • Use new technology to compete successfully with other companies. Business in the New Economy (p. 241-242)

  6. Why is it important for businesses to keep pace with new technology? Business in the New Economy (p. 241-242)

  7. Customers expect high quality customer service. Working hours are no longer the traditional 9:00am-5:00pm. Because of technology, customers can place orders at any time of day, so businesses must be able to work at any time of day. Business in the New Economy (p. 241-242)

  8. Why is it important for a business to deliver its goods or services without delay? Business in the New Economy (p. 241-242)

  9. Businesses are reducing staff and services by downsizing. Businesses believe that with new technology, workers are more productive and therefore, they do not need as many workers. Businesses are also outsourcing (hiring part-time, temporary, and contract workers who can supply services if and when they are needed). Business in the New Economy (p. 241-242)

  10. What are other advantages for a company to downsize or outsource? Business in the New Economy (p. 241-242)

  11. Computers allow information and money to move quickly. Businesses can sell their goods abroad more easily than before because of the global economy. Business in the New Economy (p. 241-242)

  12. Businesses form strategic alliances with other companies to help them make, market, and sell their goods or services. Through offshore outsourcing, companies can produce goods (cheaply) in another country and then bring them back to Canada. Business in the New Economy (p. 241-242)

  13. Past: Managers told people what to do. Present: Businesses assemble teams of workers with specialized skills and knowledge to work together in project teams. Working in teams is easy with telework (using telephones and computers to connect workers in various areas and offices). Business in the New Economy (p. 241-242)
