  2. NSAID COX 2 INHIBITOR • CELEBREX • CELECOXIB • INDICATION • RA • OA • inflammation • mild to moderate pain • Additional uses include primary dysmenorrhea, ankylosingspondylitis, JRA. • ACTION • inhibition of cyclooxygenase

  3. WARNINGS • black box warning for drug class concerning cardiovascular and GI risks. • Take with food • Avoid alcohol, APAP and ASA • D/D • MISC. NOTES • Drug interactions: • ASA • Biphosphonates • warfarin

  5. NSAIDS • VOLTAREN • DICLOFENAC • MOTRIN • IBUPROFEN • INDOCIN • INDOMETHACIN • MOBIC • MELOXICAM • RELAFEN • NABUMETONE • NAPROSYN • NAPROXEN • FELDENE • PIROXICAM

INDICATION • RA, OA, inflammation, mild to moderate pain • Ibuprofen: also indicated for migraines. • Indomethacin: also indicated for gouty arthritis • ACTION • inhibition of cyclooxygenase (COX-1 and /or COX-2) which decreases prostaglandin synthesis • WARNINGS • black box warning for drug class concerning cardiovascular and GI risks. Take with food. Avoid alcohol, APAP and ASA. D/D • INTERACTIONS • ASA, biphosphonates, warfarin

  7. BONE GROWTH REGULATORbiphosphonate • BONIVA • IBANDRONATE • ACTONEL • RISEDRONATE • INDICATION • osteoporosis, glucocorticoid induced osteoporosis. • Risedronate: pagetsdisease • ACTION • inhibit bone reabsorption

  8. WARNINGS • Oral use • tablets should be swallowed whole with 180-240ml of plain water. Patient is to remain upright for at least 60minutes after dosing. Weekly: take on same day each week. Monthly: take on same day each month Jan 10th, Feb 10th etc. • IV use • must be given intravenously and not intraarterially to avoid tissue damage. Not to be mixed with other IV medications. • adequate calcium and vit D intake essential. • Report signs of esophageal issues.

  9. CORTICOSTEROIDS • MEDROL/SOLUMEDROL • METHYLPREDNISOLONE • STERAPRED • PREDNISONE • INDICATION • rheumatic disorders, replacement therapy, allergic states, respiratory diseases and others. • ACTION • stimulates the adrenal cortex to secrete cortisol

  10. WARNINGS • take with food. Take in the morning. Side effects more prominent with extended use • INTERACTIONS • ASA, diuretics, phenytoin(hydantoins) • ADDITIONAL NOTES • Dosing: very individual. Lowest possible dose should be used.

  11. ANTIHISTAMINE/ANTIANXIETY‘first generation’ antihistamine. Atarax-tab, Vistaril-cap • VISTARIL • HYDROXYZINE PAMOATE • ATARAX • HYDROXYZINE HCL • INDICATION • allergic reactions, sedative, motion sickness. Pruritis, sedation, anxiety and tension • ACTION • competes with histamine for H1 receptor sites in GI tract, blood vessels and respiratory tract

  12. WARNINGS • avoid alcohol. D/D, take with water • ADDITIONAL NOTES • INTENSIFIES NARCOTICS

  13. ANTIHISTAMINE2ND GENERATION • ZYRTEC • CITIRIZINE • ALLEGRA • FEXOFENADINE • XYZAL • LEVCITIRIZINE • INDICATION • allergic rhinitis, urticaria, hay fever • WARNING • less drowsiness than first generation • ADDITIONAL NOTES • ZYRTEC OTC

  14. THYROID REPLACEMENT THERAPY • SYNTHROID/LEVOXYL • LEVOTHYROXINE • CYTOMEL • LIOTHYRONINE • INDICATION • HYPOTHYROIDISM • ACTION • hormone replacement levothyroxine; T4. liothyronine: T3

  15. WARNINGS • several food interactions, antacids, anticoagulants, phenytoin. • Black box warning: should not be used alone or in combination with other therapeutic agents for obesity. May cause serious or life threatening manifestations of toxicity.

  16. ANTITHROID • TAPAZOLE • METHIMAZOLE • INDICATION • hyperthyroidism, thyrotoxic crisis • ACTION • blocks oxidation of iodine, inhibiting the synthesis of T3 and T4. • WARNINGS • may cause bone marrow depression. May cause fetal harm. • Take with food. • Drug interactions: include digoxin, warfarin
