  2. Workshop outline: your promotional strategy This workshop will help you to define where you are, where you want to be and how you might best get there 1 Where are you / do you want to be? 2 4 Understand pathways and criteria Strategy and support 3 Assemble evidence

  3. 1. Where are you currently? • Define your current professional network: internal/external contacts/organisations/community groups • What are these contacts helping you to achieve? • Compare your responses with the person next to you – what can you learn from them?

  4. 2. What academic career pathways are open to you? • At UWE, Bristol: • Teaching:Ass. HoD, Ass. Prof, Faculty Director/Prof. • Teaching & Research:Ass. HoD, Ass. Prof, Faculty Director/Prof. • Research:Associate Professor, Professor • KE/Other: Ass. HoD, Ass. Prof, Faculty Director/Professor • Management: Associate Head, Head of Department At many institutions today you can focus on one of a number of pathways – always think about linking T & R

Associate Professor • Promotion to Associate Professor is considered on the grounds of outstanding achievement, and national standing, in research and innovation, or in teaching and learning • In addition to outstanding achievement in whichever area is selected, a successful case for promotion must include at least competence in the other Professor a) Excellent performance in any two out of the three areas listed below, as evidenced by achievement of a significant proportion of the criteria listed under the relevant areas or b) Exceptional performance in at least one area as evidenced by achievement of a substantial proportion of the criteria listed under that area • Research • Teaching • External Engagement Courtesy of Newcastle University

Examining professorial criteria • Read and categorise the National Academic Role Profile (NARP) statements provided in the bags • Compare them with the professorial person • specification from Birkbeck – how do they compare? • In pairs, consider how you would add to your • professional networks and gain evidence to move • towards the professorial profile

Strategy and support • prepare continuously and be transparent about ambitions: • - discuss in annual PDRs • - showcase your talent internally • - maintain an external profile • - use T & R synergies to your advantage • work with a mentor – evidence it aids career advancement • (esp. for women in academia: e.g. Chandler, 1996) • complete mentor question sheet ... and plan ahead with a • mentor
