Welcome to IRSC’s LIVE Virtual Lesson on: Converting Between Fractions, Decimals and Percents Instructor: Lara DiMartino
What you will learn today: How to change a: • Fraction to a decimal. • Fraction to a percent. • Decimal to a percent. • Decimal to a fraction. • Percent to a decimal. • Percent to a fraction.
What are equivalent numbers? Two numbers that are found in the same place on the number line. 0.5 = 1/2 0 1 2 3 *They have the same value.
Example: 1 A quarter can be written... • As a percentage: 25% • As a decimal: 0.25 • As a fraction: 25/100 ->1/4
Example: 2 Half can be written... • As a percentage: 50% • As a decimal: 0.5 • As a fraction: 50/100 1/2
Example: 3 Three quarters can be written... • As a percentage: 75% • As a decimal: 0.75 • As a fraction: 75/100 3/4
Example: 4 One whole can be written... • As a percentage: 100% • As a whole number: 1 • As a fraction: 100/100 = 1
Notes: • Fractions and decimals represent the same things: numbers that are not whole numbers. • Percent means "out of 100.“ • 0.25 is the same as .25 • 1.0 is the same as 1
Repeating Decimals A repeating decimal, also called a recurring decimal, is a number whose decimal repeats over and over. The repeating portion is marked with a line called a vinculum. Example: 1/3 = 0.33333333 0.3 2/3 = 0.66666666 0.6 1/7 = 0.142857142857142857 0.142857
From a Fraction to a Decimal *Remember fractions are division problems. ¾ is 3 divided by 4. Divide the denominator into the numerator. ¾ = 0.75
From a Decimal to a Percent 1. Move the decimal 2 spaces to the right. • Add a percent sign. 0.25 25%
From a Fraction to a Percent • First change the fraction to a decimal. • Then change the decimal to a percent. • Add a percent sign. 2/5 = 0.4 = 40% Divide Move 2 spaces Add a %
From a Decimal to a Fraction You must use your understanding of place value. 0.45 = 45/100(Then reduce!) 9/20 tenths hundredths
Decimal to a Fraction Continued: • Make the given number (minus the decimal) the numerator. • Determine the place value of the number that is furthest to the right, and make that the denominator. Ex: 0.8 = 8/10 Then reduce to … 4/5 tenths place
From a Percent to a Decimal 34% = 0.34 1. Move the decimal 2 spaces to the left. 2. Drop the percent sign.
From a Percent to a Fraction 80% 80/100 We know that percent means “out of 100”, so… • We put 80 over 100. • Then reduce! 4/5
