Husbands, boyfriends and credit cards all shudder when they hear the name, but Singapore’s Orchard Road is where you’ll find international big brands. Then there’s Mustafa Centre, a massive 24 hour department store reminiscent of the emporiums of old. In Singapore, the cooler evenings are the perfect time to sample local fare. Drop by the roadside vendors in Chinatown and head for Smith, Temple, Mosque and Pagoda Streets. Smith Street is pedestrianised and an exciting ‘Eat Street’. It’s also a great spot for tasty duck, and the Singaporean specialty, chilli cooked crab. An oasis in Singapore, Gardens by the Bay is where art meets nature. Spanning 250 acres, great sculptures and huge conservatories entwine with fascinating flora. A sanctuary of calm on Singapore’s startling waterfront. Orang utans. Everyone loves these cheeky orange apes. Explore Malaysia’s Sepilok Orang Utan Rehab Centre and visit the last wild orang utans of northern Borneo. As curious as they are cute, the forest and peaceful atmosphere is beneficially relaxing for both visitors and residents alike. Malls, malls and more malls, you must be in Kuala Lumpur! Eight malls are found in the city centre alone, while 20 minutes away, in the greater Klang Valley area, there are 12 additional shopping complexes to keep you occupied. Trying a Singapore Sling is a rite of passage for most travellers. Originating in Raffles Hotel Singapore over a century ago, frequent the Long Bar on the hotel’s second floor and sling back a Sling. If you’re more of a market peruser, Malaysia’s Gaya Street Fair (Kota Kinabalu) is a Sunday must-do. Based in the area of Kota Kinabalu in Sabah, sellers are already trading by 6am. It gets hotter and more colourful as the hours tick by; prepare yourself for a bustling hub of street chatter and local culture. In Malaysia, Penang’s Hawker Street is street food supremacy. From Char Kuay Teow to Roti Chanai, each chef showcases their own unique flavours. The options are endless and the ambience electric. Air conditioning there is not, but you’re guaranteed to find an authentic (albeit balmy) street scene. Borneo’s Mulu Caves deep in Sarawak’s Gunung Mulu National Park is the world’s largest cave passage and a spectacle of both size and beauty. Then there’s the Cameron Highlands, Malaysia’s largest hill-station, with tea plantations and strawberry farms, the terrain’s an eye-pleaser. 2

The island resort of Sentosa plays host to the popular Tanjong Beach Club; a luxury beach club fronting the water. Boasting a huge pool, bar and sun loungers so comfy they’ll swallow you whole, the venue’s suitable for families, couples, groups et al. Alternatively, ride the Bumboat along the Singapore River; the skyline views are simply spectacular. Nowhere more-so than Singapore does culture from the west collide quite spectacularly with the east. A melting pot of Colonial British, Chinese, Indian and Malay history. Interactive and innovative, Malaysia’s Legoland has life-size figurines, thrilling rides and quirky Lego activities both adults and children will be in make- believe heaven. Singapore does have a conservative approach to alcohol, but it hasn’t stopped expats from opening a number of great bars. Leisurely lunches at Clarke, Robinson, and Boat Quays will mostly be a western affair, whereas Tiong Bahru Market offers a great mix of traditional delicacies. Singapore’s eclectic juxtaposition can be seen from the architecture in the sky to the food on your plate. Animal lovers revel at The River Safari; a river-themed zoo and aquarium in Singapore, complete with resident pandas. Also in Singapore, you’ll find Adventure Cove WaterparkTM. As well as waterslides, highlights include an enormous lazy river, snorkelling with fish and a wave pool. And if you’re in Malaysia, Sunway Lagoon Theme Park also entertains the thrill-seekers. Malaysia’s Langkawi Beaches are the kind of sandy havens that make you sigh. It’s near enough impossible to resist the perennially blue sea and platinum white sand. If you’d rather be below the water, the island of Sipadan is a diver’s dream location. Warm, calm and with excellent visibility, there’s a smorgasbord of marine life, including more turtles than grains of sand (not quite but almost). The allure of Sipadan is unavoidable. For a cultural experience that’s 100% authentic, enquire about a homestay with Borneo locals. You’ll get to stay with a traditional family, observe their way of life and partake in many of the activities that make up their day to day. For heights, Langkawi Sky Bridge is a 125 metre giant found in Malaysia. An engineering wonder, you’ll feel like you’re walking in the clouds. Vivocity – Located five minutes from the CBD, VivoCity is every shopper’s dream. Tickets to the skybridge sell out fast, but how often do you get to feel on top of the world? Batu Caves –Located 13 kilometres north of Kuala Lumpur. Featuring a complex of giant limestone caves housing Hindu temples. 21. Penang Batu Ferringhi Beach Highlights worth seeing along the way Penang Hawker Food – As Penang is the food capital of Malaysia, visit Gurney Drive. It’s the best of Penang on a plate! Hawkers fire up their woks and dish out street food for a king. The popular seafront promenade exemplifies the colours and atmosphere of Penang – fun, lively and vibrant. Penang Hill – Take a short ride up the funicular or a 2-3 hour hike, where you’ll be spoilt with a fantastic view of Georgetown and the Penang Bridge at the summit. Visit at night time for the best views of Georgetown lit up. Kek Lok Si Temple – The largest Buddhist Temple in Malaysia, located hillside and dating back to the early 20th century. Reach the top by a mini-funicular train where you’ll be greeted by a giant statue of Kuan Yin, the Goddess of Mercy. Over Chinese New Year the temple is covered with hundreds of lanterns which makes for an even more spectacular photo. Shopping – On Gurney Drive you’ll find an array of hawker stalls to choose from in the evening as well as Gurney Plaza, featuring a good selection of international brands. The Street of Harmony – A famous street featuring many different places of worship including Masjid Kapitan Keling Mosque, Kuan Yin and Sri Mahamariamman Temples, St George’s Church, Cathedral of Assumption and Khoo Kongsi. Snake Temple – Famous for its pit vipers living within the temple grounds. If you’re brave enough you can even touch them. Legend has it that a healer gave shelter to the snakes of the jungle and once the temple was complete the snakes appeared on their own accord. Get around by Trishaw – Hire one of these three wheeled, human powered vehicles and hear the history of this island from a local, it’s like your own private city tour. Make sure you negotiate the fare beforehand. Penang Museum & Art Gallery – Built in 1821 and previously called the Penang Free School. Now showcasing old photographs, maps, historical relics and paintings of early Penang. A great insight to Penang’s history. Water sports – Hit Batu Ferringhi for water activities such as banana boat riding, jet ski, parasailing and catamaran sailing to name a few. Explore Penang This turtle shaped island is located 8 kilometres west of Mainland Malaysia and accessible by road over two bridges, ferry or plane. Often referred to as the ‘Pearl of the Orient’, Penang is well known for its easy going kampungs (villages), sandy beaches, sightseeing and food. Due to the diverse culture, foodies are spoilt for choice here, as each culture with their unique cooking styles have dared to create dishes that are a blend of tastes and spices. Famed throughout the country for specialties such as Laksa and Nasi Kandar which are found everywhere around the island. Venture out at night in search of a restaurant full of Penang locals, because where there’s locals, there’s good food. For the best Char Kway Teow (a popular noodle dish) take a walk along Lorong Selamat in Georgetown. One of the main attractions of Penang are the beaches. Batu Ferringhi along the north of the island, is by far the best and most visited beach area. With plenty of luxury hotels and restaurants, it’s a favourite with both locals and visitors. For more secluded, unspoilt beaches head to the north-western coast. Here you’ll find Monkey Beach, Muka Head, Pantai Kerachut and Teluk Kampi which are all part of the Penang National Park. Georgetown is the second largest city in Malaysia and a favourite spot for visitors. Featuring one of the largest collections of 19th and early 20th century churches, temples, mosques and colonial buildings you can see why it’s classed as a UNESCO World Heritage-site. Finish the day with a visit to the centuries old Snake Temple or the Temple of Azure Cloud and discover the pit viper snakes Orang utan and Mangrove Forest Visit Orang utan Island, a research institution dedicated to the preservation and research of orang utans. Continue on to the Matang Mangrove Forest. Take a closer look at the mangrove trees and the animals that live in the muddy coastal floor of the mangrove ecosystem. Penang Gastro Adventure Penang is considered the culinary capital of Malaysia and nowhere is the diversity of dishes and range of flavours more evident than in its beautiful capital, Georgetown. 24. Langkawi © Malaysia Tourism Highlights worth seeing along the way Langkawi Cable Car & Sky bridge – A 15 minute journey by cable car will see you to the top of Mt. Mat Cincang. Admire the lush rainforests and the minuscule islands from the 708 metre peak. Head to the observatory deck or make your way to the 125 metre long curved skybridge. This bridge suspends by cable, so it’s not for the faint-hearted. Telaga Tujuh Waterfalls – Also known as the Seven Wells, this is a group of seven pools connected by a series of waterfalls flowing down the side of Mat Cincang Mountain. Head to the foot of the mountain and walk up the steps to the lowest pool or hike to an upper pool. The locals believe the area is a favourite haunt for mountain fairies. Underwater World – Housing more than 500 species of sea creatures including penguins, flamingos and harbour seals. Take a walk through the underwater tunnel for up close and personal views of giant stingrays, green turtles and sharks. Mangroves – Take a mangrove tour of the beach area at Tanjung Rhu. Venture through limestone caves, mangrove swamps and further inland, to dense forest. Island hopping – Take a boat to a nearby island. One of our favourites is the island of the Pregnant Maiden, only 15 minutes from Langkawi. With a huge limestone hill in the middle of the island rising high above a dense rainforest. Make sure you take a dip in the refreshing Pregnant Maiden Lake to cool down. Canopy Trekking – Gunung Raya is Langkawi’s tallest mountain and home to 400 different tree species and an array of wildlife. Here you can abseil, climb, rappel and glide over treetops on a cable system 100 feet above the ground. Dataran Lang (Eagle Square) – Featuring a striking 12 metre tall sculpture of an eagle ready to take flight. Set in the township of Kuah, this area also features miniature fountains, terraces and great sea views. Gunung Raya – The highest peak in Langkawi at a height of 881 metres. Legend has it the mountain is the cursed giant called Mat Raya who once lived there. With lush rainforest it’s a great place to go hiking in search of local wildlife. Explore Langkawi An archipelago made up of 99 islands in the Andaman Sea just 30 kilometres off the coast of Mainland Malaysia. 30. Experience Borneo A perfect destination for those looking for an adventure, Borneo is home to some of the world’s oldest rainforests and spectacular diving sites. Favourite pastimes here include trekking through the jungle, bird watching and looking out for exotic wildlife. Malaysian Borneo makes up the northern half of the island of Borneo, with the southern region being part of Indonesia. Split into two Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak, both offer unique experiences. Sabah is the perfect place to start in this land of eco treasures. Untouched and unspoilt, Sabah’s heart is Mt.Kinabalu, an impressive granite peak stretching 4,100 metres. Any trip to Sabah is not complete with at least a walk round the base of this famous mountain. Witness the ‘wild man of Borneo’ – the orang utan, at Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre, the largest sanctuary in the world or offshore head out to the Turtle Islands where environmental projects are underway to help the ancient sea turtles. Experience Borneo Our favourite things to see and do The Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre – Located in Sandakan, this rehabilitation centre was set up in 1964 to rehabilitate orphaned orang utan. Watch the orang utan up close in their natural habitat. A boardwalk leads to a viewing gallery and feeding platform where the orang utan are fed milk and bananas twice a day. While rehabilitation is the main goal here, the creation of the reserve also minimises the impact of deforestation. Sipadan – If you are a keen diver, this is the place to go. Formed by living corals growing on top of an extinct volcano, this area is now rated by many dive journalists as one of the top diving destinations in the world. It is located in the Celebes Sea off the east coast of Sabah. Gaya Street Fair – Every Sunday in Kota Kinabalu, Gaya Street is closed off to traffic so traders can set up their stalls. Shop for anything, from batik sarongs, fruits and flowers, arts and crafts, to footwear, antiques and souvenirs. If you like coffee, pick up some local Tenom coffee. Mulu Caves – This spectacular cave system, deep in Sarawak’s Gunung Mulu National Park near Miri, has over 200 kilometres of cave passages. Over millennia the flow of water has cut deep gorges through the Park’s limestone mountains and within the rock itself, creating a network of vast caves. The main underground attractions of the Mulu Caves include Clearwater Cave, the longest cave in South East Asia, and Deer Cave. Selingan Island – On the east coast of Sabah, stay overnight at the lodge so you can see turtles come ashore to lay eggs 365 nights of the year. 32. Kota Kinabalu Sabah’s main city is Kota Kinabalu. Razed to the ground by the British and occupying Japanese, the city was effectively rebuilt in the late 1940s. Many of Sabah’s main attractions are within an easy day trip from the city, making it ideal for exploring. The city itself is based on the coast, overlooking a cluster of islands in the South China Sea. To the other side it is backdropped by the towering Crocker Mountain Range with Mt. Take time to stroll along the promenade and enjoy the sights and flavours of the city before heading out to explore Sarawak further. Borneo Tours Turtle Island and Sepilok Orang Utans 2 days/1 night Danum Valley Rainforest 3 days/2 nights Head to Selingan Turtle Island on this overnight tour and witness the turtles laying their eggs on the beach before heading back to the mainland for a visit to the Sepilok Orang Utan Centre where the orphaned orang utans are fed. Immerse yourself in this lowland tropical rainforest, home to many birds and mammals. It is the only place where the enigmatic Spectacled Flowerpecker has been recorded. Orang utans, gibbons, and other primates may be seen. Day 1: Sandakan – Selingan Turtle Island Located 40 kilometres north of Sandakan, the island is an important turtle breeding area. A safe haven for endangered green and hawksbill turtles, this marine park is visited almost every night by turtles coming ashore to lay their eggs. Transfer by boat to Selingan to enjoy an afternoon swim or stroll around the island. After dinner, visit the Exhibition Centre while the park ranger locates turtles coming ashore. If you are lucky, you may get the opportunity to release little turtle hatchlings from the hatchery to the sea. Day 1: Lahad Datu – Danum Valley Conservation Area Transfer overland to Danum Valley Conservation area, Sabah’s largest protected area of lowland dipterocarp forest, preserved for conservation and research. Trek through trails for an opportunity to observe species of mammals, reptiles, amphibians and birds living in this fascinating world of tropical rainforest. Search for nocturnal animals in an open air Jeep, weather permitting. Day 2: Rainforest Walk across a 300 metre canopy walkway for amazing rainforest views. Trek up Coffin Cliff to visit the ancient burial site, where coffins are wedged along the cliff side. Proceed to the ‘View Point’ for a bird’s eye view of the area. Descend to ‘Jacuzzi Pool’ for a refreshing dip. Enjoy a night walk. Day 2: Sepilok Orang Utan Sanctuary Depart for Sandakan to visit one of the world’s largest orang utan sanctuaries. Known as Pongo Pymaeus, this ape shares up to 96.4% of the human genetic makeup. Take a short walk through the lowland dipterocarp forest to the observation platform to watch the orang utans being fed by the rangers. Your arrangements end back at your hotel or the airport. Borneo Tours Diving at Sipidan 4 days/3 nights Best of Kuching 4 days/3 nights Rated by many dive journalists as one of the top destinations for diving in the world, Sipidan was formed by living corals growing on top of an extinct volcanic cone that took thousands of years to develop. In the state of Sarawak, Kuching lies on the banks of the Sarawak River on the north western part of the island of Borneo. Although it has a slower pace than some other Malaysian cities, there are still markets and restaurants in abundance. Day 1: Tawau Upon arrival at Tawau Airport, transfer by coach to Semporna and then by boat to your chosen dive resort. Day 1: Kuching On arrival at Kuching Airport you will be swept away to discover the charms of this riverine city. Stop by the Tua Pek Kong Chinese Temple, Kuching’s oldest temple. Proceed to Sarawak Museum for a tour of the Ethnology section housed in a colonial building reminiscent of a French château. Terms & Conditions Please read these booking conditions carefully CONSUMER GUARANTEES ACT The guarantees under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 will apply to services supplied by us except where they are acquired, or held out as being acquired for business purposes. this brochure which are brought to our attention. Prior to completing your booking, you should ask your travel agent whether they are aware of any changes to the published information. You should also make sure that if your travel agent is advised of changes which occur after booking, your travel agent is able to contact you. check with your travel agent regarding what cancellation fees may be applicable. 8.3 We strongly recommend that you insure yourself fully against cancellation due to unforeseen circumstances. See Section 10. 9. RESERVATION AMENDMENTS We are happy to incorporate any reasonable amendments you request. An amendment constitutes a change to an existing booking and will attract a $25 fee per amendment prior to final payment and the issuing of the travel documents, and a $50 fee per amendment after travel documents have been issued. These fees are to cover administration and communication costs. You may also be required to pay any Supplier imposed fees. 1. ITEMS NOT COVERED Unless otherwise specified, the cost of airfares, meals, drinks, laundry, insurance, sightseeing, transfers, local taxes, airport departure taxes, Airline imposed insurance levies, passenger service charges and Passport or Visa application fees are not included. 4.6 Rental Cars: We cannot guarantee to provide a particular model or colour within the car category. Availability of car categories is subject to confirmation at the time of booking. We reserve the right to substitute different models. If a vehicle is returned prior to the end of the reserved rental period or if the vehicle is picked up later than the reserved date, NO REFUND will be made for unused rental days 1.3 We are not able to exercise control over services we do not supply directly, therefore we will not be responsible for any loss or damage arising from: 12. VISAS/PASSPORTS For all holidays in this brochure you will require a valid passport. You are responsible for arranging your own passport, visa and health requirements including inoculation. You should check with your travel agent who will be able to provide you with the necessary information. - Any booking made directly with a service Supplier by your travel agent, or 5. PRICES 5.1 The price indicator is provided as a guide only. It is based on low season, per adult share twin pricing and is correct at the time of printing. The actual price may differ to that indicated due to currency fluctuations, special events, trade shows or peak periods. Price indicators for hotels are per person per night for share twin in a standard room (except for villas if specified). - Any services which are not directly provided by us and which are additional to those recorded in clause 1.1 above. 13. NON-USE OF SERVICES OR FACILITIES If, of your own choice, you decide not to use part or parts of the arranged services or facilities, you will not be entitled to a refund from us (provided we have carried out our service with reasonable skill and care and to your requirements) and you may not be entitled to a refund from any Supplier. 1.4 We will endeavour to provide the most suitable travel arrangements to meet the particular requirements you make known to us. However, travel is an individual experience, and your preferences and opinions may vary from our own. For this reason, we cannot take responsibility for your individual satisfaction. 5.2 We will guarantee the price of the portion of the booking as processed by us, against currency fluctuation for a period of seven (7) days from the time of confirmation of the booking; note: special conditions apply for cruise bookings. It is the responsibility of your travel agent to advise you of the date of confirmation. If your booking remains unpaid after the seven (7) day guarantee period it will be subject to currency fluctuation, up to the time full payment is received by us. 2. SUPPLY OF TRAVEL, ENTERTAINMENT AND ACCOMMODATION SERVICES AND FACILITIES 2.1 When we make bookings with Suppliers, we are acting as a booking agent for such Supplier. 14. HEALTH OR DISABILITY Some Suppliers may reserve the right to refuse to carry or accommodate people who because of a health condition or disability may require services or facilities to be provided in a special manner. You should check this with your travel agent. 5.3 Events beyond our control, such as changes to the prices of aviation fuel or changes to the cost of services or facilities may result in the prices charged to you being different from those shown in the brochure. You should check all prices with your travel agent before making reservations, and before ticketing. 2.2 All travel, entertainment, and accommodation facilities or services are supplied directly to you by the Suppliers. We have no control over the facilities or services themselves, or the manner in which they are provided by the Suppliers. Therefore you should be aware of the following conditions: 15. SERVICE SATISFACTION During your holiday, if you encounter any situation where the service supplied to you does not meet your satisfaction, please take the matter up with the Supplier immediately. Your contract for each service is with the Supplier. If this is not possible immediately, or if you are still dissatisfied, please contact your travel agent. Both we and your travel agent will endeavour to investigate on your behalf and to negotiate with the Supplier to resolve the matter as soon as possible, so that you continue to enjoy your journey. - We will not be liable for any loss or damage of any kind which may arise from your use or consumption of, or inability to use or consume those facilities or services. 5.4 Prices may also be liable to variation between the time of booking and the date of departure due to events beyond our control. Due to unforeseen events we reserve the right to vary the price up to the time of your departure. - The provision of those facilities or services is subject to the terms and conditions of your contract with each Supplier. 6. HOUSE OF TRAVEL ACCOMMODATION RATINGS - Where for any reason, a Supplier is unable to provide particular facilities or services, then that Supplier may be entitled, under its contract with you, to substitute those services or facilities with comparable or equivalent facilities or services without incurring any liability to you. You should check your contract with each Supplier. 16. LEGAL CLAIMS Any claims or legal action in connection with the provision of our services to you will be governed by the laws of New Zealand. Any claim or legal action against the Suppliers is likely to be subject to the terms of your contract with them, and may be governed by the laws of other countries. To assist you with the selection of your accommodation, we have created our own rating system allowing you to compare each property. Please note that these gradings are to be used as a guide only and may alter throughout the year due to a change of circumstances. Please check with your House of Travel consultant to ensure you get the property that best suits your needs. - All facilities or services described by us are subject to availability from the Supplier. 7. PAYMENT - We will not be liable or responsible for any loss or damage relating to your baggage, personal possessions, health or welfare, or delays or travel disruptions unless these arise directly from the service we provide to you. 7.1 A non-refundable deposit will be required by your travel agent and must be paid at the time of booking. This is in addition to any deposits imposed by Suppliers. 3. BUSINESS PURPOSES You agree that where our services are acquired for business purposes, or where you hold yourself out as acquiring our services for business purposes, the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 will not apply to any supply of goods or services made under these conditions, and we will not be liable or responsible for any loss or damage of any kind to you, including any consequential loss or damage however it may be caused. 7.2 A communication charge may be made for bookings requested less than 72 hours prior to departure. 7.3 Final payment must be made in full before we can release travel documents (including tickets). 8. CANCELLATION 8.1 If you wish to cancel your booking for any reason, you must advise us in writing through your travel agent as soon as possible. 4. INFORMATION IN THIS BROCHURE 4.1 While we attempt to ensure that the contents of this brochure are correct, accurate, and up to date at the time of printing, the contents of this brochure are drawn from information supplied to us by Suppliers. We do not have, and cannot be reasonably expected to have, personal knowledge about all of the facilities or services provided by each Supplier. 8.2 If you cancel your booking or any part of your booking, we will impose a cancellation fee in respect of each person travelling under that booking. You must also pay all cancellation fees imposed by Suppliers and your travel agent. These cancellation fees are required to offset booking, communication, and administrative charges which have already been incurred by us, Suppliers and your travel agent.
