Pop Culture • Popular musicals on Broadway were made into movies. • The radio was the main way to listen to music. • The Flintstones was the second prime cartoon on television. • The main dances were the Mashed Potato, the Swim, The Watusi, the Monkey and the Jerk, and the Twist.
Fashion • For young women, miniskirts was a major development. • Women usually wore a skimpy top or a see through blouse with miniskirts. • Boutiques were invented for ready-to-wear clothes for the youth. • Women usually straightened their hair.
Communication • In 1962 the first transatlantic reception of a television signal using the TELSTAR satellite. • TELSTAR and other communication satellites began to radically change American's understanding of the world. • The electronics in cell phones were first invented in the 1960s. • In 1967, mobile phone technology was available, but, the user had to stay within one cell area.
Music • The main types of music were psychedelic, folk rock, and pop. • Pink Floyd played psychedelic music. • Bands used long instrumental solos and weird electronic effects for a crazy style. • Drugs changed music in the mid-1960s. • Music was more mellow.

Natural Disasters • On March 27, 1964 a great earthquake of magnitude 9.2 occurred in Alaska. • The 1964 earthquake killed 131 people. • Palm Sunday tornado outbreak was on April 11, 1965. There were forty-seven tornados in the Midwest. • A leak in a valve supplying propane to the popcorn warmer caused a blast that killed 74 and injured over 400 people.
Changing Roles of Individuals and Families • Women formed the National Organization of Women to gain more equality. • Women gained more freedom when birth control became available. • African- Americans fought for better job opportunities. • The first black actor was Sidney Poitier.
