  2. Pop Culture • Popular musicals on Broadway were made into movies. • The radio was the main way to listen to music. • The Flintstones was the second prime cartoon on television. • The main dances were the Mashed Potato, the Swim, The Watusi, the Monkey and the Jerk, and the Twist.

  3. Fashion • For young women, miniskirts was a major development. • Women usually wore a skimpy top or a see through blouse with miniskirts. • Boutiques were invented for ready-to-wear clothes for the youth. • Women usually straightened their hair.

  4. Communication • In 1962 the first transatlantic reception of a television signal using the TELSTAR satellite. • TELSTAR and other communication satellites began to radically change American's understanding of the world. • The electronics in cell phones were first invented in the 1960s. • In 1967, mobile phone technology was available, but, the user had to stay within one cell area.

  5. Music • The main types of music were psychedelic, folk rock, and pop. • Pink Floyd played psychedelic music. • Bands used long instrumental solos and weird electronic effects for a crazy style. • Drugs changed music in the mid-1960s. • Music was more mellow.

Music • Dion Dimuci recorded a song that was in response to JFK and Martin Luther King, Jr.’s assassination. • Hendrix, Joplin, and the Doors lead singer, Jim Morrison, all died from drug overdoses. • The British Invasion was a movement in the mid-1960s. • Several bands in the UK were creating a buzz in the United States.

  8. National and International Headlines • Malcolm X was murdered in 1965. • The Vietnam war began. The White House usually voted for nuclear bombs, but JFK did not want to use them. • Neil Armstrong was the first human being to walk on the moon in 1969. • Israel defeats forces of Egypt, Jordan, and Syria in a six day war.

  9. Transportation • By the late 1960s, there was nearly one car for every two people. • More families bought a second car. • The need for more superhighways increased. • In 1946, Verrazano – Narrows bridge was built.

  10. Sports News • Arnold Palmer won the Masters three times in 1960. He also won the British and United States Open. • Muhammad Ali was one of the most famous athletes. • Surfing became popular for younger people in Hawaii. • Billie – Jean King won Wimbledon Ladies Singles three times.

  11. Scientific Inventions/Technology • The electric toothbrush was invented in 1961. • Digital Equipment Corp. invented the first minicomputer in 1963. • The first electronic system to switch telephone calls was invented in 1965. • Velcro was invented in the 1960s.

Literature • Many books were written to appeal to the baby boomers. • Literature reflected what was happening in politics and social issues of America. • To Kill a Mocking Bird writtenby Harper Lee, was published in 1960 and taught tolerance. • Catch-22 by Joseph Heller, shows that power is absolute. It teaches diligence.

  15. Natural Disasters • On March 27, 1964 a great earthquake of magnitude 9.2 occurred in Alaska. • The 1964 earthquake killed 131 people. • Palm Sunday tornado outbreak was on April 11, 1965. There were forty-seven tornados in the Midwest. • A leak in a valve supplying propane to the popcorn warmer caused a blast that killed 74 and injured over 400 people.

  16. Changing Roles of Individuals and Families • Women formed the National Organization of Women to gain more equality. • Women gained more freedom when birth control became available. • African- Americans fought for better job opportunities. • The first black actor was Sidney Poitier.

More were made on location. • There was more nudity, bad language, and violence in major movies. • The Motion Picture Association of America developed a rating system to avoid government censorship. • The Sound of Music was a big blockbuster hit in 1965.
