Definitions • Infatuation: state of being completely carried away by unreasoning passion or attraction. • Mature Love: strong affection for, and a deep attachment to, a person whose character the partner knows well. • Intimacy: being very close and familiar, as in relationships involving PRIVATE and PERSONAL sharing. (not sexual intimacy)

Types of Families • Stepfamily: created by remarriage • Extended family: grandparents, aunts, and or uncles live in one household. • Foster family: government agency places child in temporary care of adult. • Married Couple: two married adults. • Nontraditional family: group of people live together. • Nuclear family: A mother and father and their natural or adopted children. • Single-parent family: One parent to his/her children.

13. The Menstrual Cycle • Cycle begins with bleeding • The lining of uterus then begins to thicken to become ready to support pregnancy. • If no pregnancy occurs, the lining weakens and is shed in the menstrual bleeding to start the cycle again.

20. Facts of Birth Defects • 1 and every 33 babies are born with a birth defect. • 4,000 different known birth defects. • Leading cause of death in first year for newborns. • Most birth defects are due to genetic and environmental factors.

Down Syndrome • Baby is born with extra chromosome. • 6,000 babies each year are born with Down Syndrome • Some common physical signs of Down syndrome include: • A flat face with an upward slant to the eye, a short neck, small ears, and a large tongue • Tiny white spots on the iris (colored part) of the eye • Small hands and feet • A single crease across the palm of the hand • Small pinky fingers that sometimes curve toward the thumb • Poor muscle tone or loose ligaments

24. Categorized as a Neural Tube Defect. • Neural tube does not close all the way. • Damage to spinal cord and nerves • Three types of Spinal Bifida • Myelomeningocele • Meningocele • Spina Bifida Occulta

25. Cleft Lip • Lip and mouth do not form properly • Happen early during pregnancy (4th and 7th week) • Smoking and diabetes can increase the risk of cleft lip.

27. Causes/Treatments • Causes: • Genes • Environmental factors, maternal diet, or maternal medication. • Treatments: • Some may get better by themselves • Surgery • Cardiac Catheterization – thread a tube through vessels where a doctor can take measurements, do test, and repair problem.
