  2. Is it LOVE or just Infatuation? Mature Love Develops at beginning of relationship. Sexual attraction is central. Extreme absorption in partner. Based on fantasy. Low self-esteem Each needs the other to feel complete. Discomfort with individual differences. Each often tears down or criticizes other. Lacks foundation Develops gradually Warm affection and friendship central. Wanting to be together without obsession. Based on reality. Can feel complete without relationship. Individual accepted. Each brings out the best in partner. Based on strong foundation of friendship. Infatuation

Definitions • Infatuation: state of being completely carried away by unreasoning passion or attraction. • Mature Love: strong affection for, and a deep attachment to, a person whose character the partner knows well. • Intimacy: being very close and familiar, as in relationships involving PRIVATE and PERSONAL sharing. (not sexual intimacy)

  6. What do you look for in a partner? In your notebook list some factors that you look for in someone you would like to build a relationship with.

  7. Breaking Up • Teen relationships; typically do not last. • Partners outgrow relationship • Most times, breakups are best for both partners. • 1/1500 teenage relationships end in marriage (1 couple every 4 years)

Love and Marriage • Marriage: is the institution that joins a man and woman by agreement for the purpose of creating and maintaining a family. • What makes a good marriage? • Good communication • Emotional maturity • Same values • Why do some marriages not last? • Lack of communication • Finances • Decisions about children • Different values and loyalties

Types of Families • Stepfamily: created by remarriage • Extended family: grandparents, aunts, and or uncles live in one household. • Foster family: government agency places child in temporary care of adult. • Married Couple: two married adults. • Nontraditional family: group of people live together. • Nuclear family: A mother and father and their natural or adopted children. • Single-parent family: One parent to his/her children.

  13. The Menstrual Cycle • Cycle begins with bleeding • The lining of uterus then begins to thicken to become ready to support pregnancy. • If no pregnancy occurs, the lining weakens and is shed in the menstrual bleeding to start the cycle again.

  14. Stages of Gestation • Zygote: fertilization to week 2 • Embryo: From week 3 through week 8 • Fetus: Week 9 through end of pregnancy • A newborn baby!

  18. Birth Defects and Other Problems • Congenital Abnormalities – “present at birth” • Birth Defects • Down Syndrome • Spina Bifida • Neural tube defects • SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome) – “may be linked to cigarette smoking”

  19. Facts of Birth Defects • 1 and every 33 babies are born with a birth defect. • 4,000 different known birth defects. • Leading cause of death in first year for newborns. • Most birth defects are due to genetic and environmental factors.

Down Syndrome • Baby is born with extra chromosome. • 6,000 babies each year are born with Down Syndrome • Some common physical signs of Down syndrome include: • A flat face with an upward slant to the eye, a short neck, small ears, and a large tongue • Tiny white spots on the iris (colored part) of the eye • Small hands and feet • A single crease across the palm of the hand • Small pinky fingers that sometimes curve toward the thumb • Poor muscle tone or loose ligaments

  22. Categorized as a Neural Tube Defect. • Neural tube does not close all the way. • Damage to spinal cord and nerves • Three types of Spinal Bifida • Myelomeningocele • Meningocele • Spina Bifida Occulta

  23. Cleft Lip • Lip and mouth do not form properly • Happen early during pregnancy (4th and 7th week) • Smoking and diabetes can increase the risk of cleft lip.

Congenital Heart Defects • Effect the structure of the heart and the way it functions. • Blood flow • Mild (hole in the heart) toSevere (missing portions of heart) • Did you know? • Most common type of birth defect • Leading cause of infant death • Present among 40,000 births in the US each year.

  25. Causes/Treatments • Causes: • Genes • Environmental factors, maternal diet, or maternal medication. • Treatments: • Some may get better by themselves • Surgery • Cardiac Catheterization – thread a tube through vessels where a doctor can take measurements, do test, and repair problem.
