  3. and now for number four… The Compound-Complex Sentence

  4. A compound-complex sentence contains two or more independent clauses and at least one dependent (subordinate) clause. Turn to an elbow partner. Based on the definition try to construct a compound-complex sentence.

  5. Example: While Ted watched, he sprang, and blood flew. dependent clause independent clause independent clause How did you do?

  6. More sentence examples: While I wait for my water to purify, I strip down to my underclothes, and I wade into the mild current. Rue stuffs another handful of leaves in her mouth, and soon I am laughing because the relief is so sweet. When I set out my gear, I put my sunglasses on the blanket, and Rue gasps a little.

  7. Pair up with an elbow partner: Think of a theme or event as inspiration for your writing. Create one simple sentence that is one independent clause with a subject and verb. Now create a second independent clause and connect it to the first with a coordinating conjunction. Finally add a dependent (subordinate) clause connected with a subordinating conjunction.

  8. Share sentences. • Identify dependent and independent clauses. • Identify coordinating and subordinating conjunctions.

  9. Finally copy and label the following compound-complex sentence. Then the apples spill to the ground, and I am blown backward into the air as the ground shakes with explosions.
