That is the explanation for the existence of neoclassical buildings along the former main avenue, Trajan Street and around the Central Park. Calea Traian Bulevardul Carol

The project had the purpose of supplying the town with decanted, filtrated and ozone-sterilized water from the Danube.

Seeing that the existence of the young national cultural institution is jeopardized, the benefactor made one more sacrifice: he sold a part of his land in Vanjulet, a small village near Drobeta. Old and sick, he realized that his dream was crumbling so Theodor Costescu sold his mansion under the market price and he continued his living in a small room inside the theatre, humiliated and forgotten by his contemporaries. Finally, he ended up in a sanatorium in Bucharest where he died on the 25th of March 1939. The sole appreciation he got during his lifetime was, without any doubt his being chosen as Member of Honor in the Romanian Academy.
