The life cycle of ferns involves a complex process starting from the fertilization of an egg, leading to the development of a young sporophyte. The mature fern, called the sporophyte, produces spores within structures called sori on its fronds. These haploid spores, formed by meiosis, are released into the air and dispersed by wind. When conditions are favorable, they germinate and form a heart-shaped structure known as prothallus. Each prothallus contains male and female structures. Ferns require water for sperm to swim to eggs, crucial for sexual reproduction.

  1. The Life Cycle of Ferns! Be sure to use your handouts AND your text (pg. 393) as additional references!

  2. An embryo begins to grow from the fertilized egg.

  3. A young sporophyte fern soon develops.

  4. The prothallus (gametophyte) will shrink. The mature fern plant is called the sporophyte because it will produce the spores.

  5. On the underside of some fronds are rows of small dots called sori (sor -ee).

  6. Within the sori, haploid spores are produced by meiosis. The spores are eventually released into the air & dispersed by the wind.

  7. Under favorable conditions of moisture, light, temperature the spores germinate. The germinating spore forms a small, heart-shaped structure called a prothallus (fern gametophyte)

  8. Each prothallus contains male (antheridium) & female (archegonium) structures. • Sperm from the antheridium swim through water to find mature eggs. Ferns are dependent on water being present for sexual reproduction!

  9. Provide the details for each step in the Life Cycle of Ferns...
