NCA ’s Prevention of Trafficking Project • Five strategies: • Awareness raising. • Capacity building of FBO partner institutions and key personnel. • Research and Data collection. • Networking with other stakeholders and relevant government institutions. • Create protection networks at community/district level.
Prevention of Trafficking in Women and Children Project • Target groups: • Women and children in areas where trafficking has reportedly had a high prevalence (Karonga, Nkhata Bay, Lilongwe, Dedza, Mchinji, Nkhotakota, Blantyre and Mulanje). • Street children in Blantyre and Lilongwe. • Key personnel from FBO partners. • Religious leaders from all denominations in Malawi.
Areas of support • Technical Assistance • Advisory role • Financial support • Data collection • Facilitation of trainings • Study Visits to Cape town and Mozambique
CAPACITY BUILDING Since 2007 to date NCA has built capacity of:- • Faith Based Institutions • Pastors, religious personnel (More than 2,000 have been trained). • Teachers • Police (Victim Support Officers) • NGO’s • District Assembly officials
Some notable achievements with partners • Micro-credit for poor families has been disbursed • Identifying children at ‘high risk’ on the streets of BT and Lilongwe • Village vigilance committees have been formed • Participated in the drafting of the trafficking in persons bill • Supported and participated the Ministry of women and child development in the activities of Day of the African Child on 16th June 2009
2010 WC and Beyond... • Financing Network on the national dialogue meeting • Study Visit to South Africa (done) • Support open day campaigns in 3 districts Karonga, Mchinji, Mangochi in the next coming months • Financial support to the Law Commission to wind up the trafficking in persons bill. • Awareness campaigns through media
Recommendations... • Continuous National NGO Consultative Conferences or dialogue meetings – identify common concerns, objectives to prevent TIP, develop an action plan and framework for cooperation and coordination • Set up a National NGO Coordination Forum to prevent trafficking in persons... • Objectives – share experiences, network, faciliate joint actions, referal protocols, strategic interventions and participation in governmental processes and forums. • AND advocate for the speedy enactment of the trafficking in persons bill into law.
