  1. Social Studies Lesson 1 Earth’s Landforms

  2. Do Now Take all the papers out of your red folder. Take them home.

  3. Write a paragraph using the words below. You may not use your book. landforms plate tectonics continental drift fault weathering erosion deposition floodplain delta

  4. word splash A floodplain is plain that has been flooded. A landform is land that is in a different form. A delta is a narrow stream. Erosion is when a river slower wears down a landform.

  5. Essential Question • How do forces of the Earth cause geographic changes?

  6. Assignment: Define the vocabulary for homework. • ..\..\Social Studies\Chapter 1\Chapter 1lfs\Chapter 1 Lesson 1\graphic organizer vocab.doc

  7. How do forces of the earth cause geographic changes? • Turn to page 20-23 in your textbook. • ..\..\..\Social Studies\Chapter 1\continents adrift.asx

  8. Summarization Activity • Write 5 facts (sentences) from the video about forces that change the Earth on the note card. • Collecting note card at 12:16 for a grade.

  9. Do Now • Add to your do now from yesterday. • Write a paragraph using the words below. landforms plate tectonics continental drift fault weathering erosion deposition floodplain delta

  10. A.Plate TectonicsThe theory that earth’s surface is divided into several major, slow-moving plates or pieces. 1. Layers of the Earth • Crust • Mantle • Outer Core • Inner Core 2. Pangaea • The name given to Earth’s landmasses when it formed one huge supercontinent. 3. Continental Drift Theory • Forces within earth caused Pangaea to break apart into continental plates and drift apart. 4. Mountain formation • tectonic plates push together • two plates collide and one moves up over the other

  11. B. Earthquakes • Plates shake causing an earthquake • A fault is a break in Earth’s crust where movement occurs.

  12. C. Volcanoes • Plates push against each other creating cracks in the crust onto Earth’s surface. • Heat within the mantle causes rock in the lower plate to melt. This molten rock is magma. • Lava is the name for magma that has escaped onto the surface.

  13. Do Now Read page 23-24 Shaping Earth’s Surface silently.

  14. D. WeatheringThe process of breaking up rocks into smaller pieces called sediments. • ..\..\..\Social Studies\Chapter 1\Chapter 1lfs\Chapter 1 Lesson 1\Weathering and Erosion pictures pp.ppt • ..\..\..\Social Studies\Chapter 1\Weathering_and_Erosion.asf

  15. D. WeatheringThe process of breaking up rocks into smaller pieces called sediments. • Water 6. Gravity • Wind 7. Plants • Temperature • Erosion-process of moving sediments. • Deposition- process of dropping sediments in a new location

  16. Humans • F:\Social Studies\Chapter 1\Humans and earth.asf

  17. E. Humans • Build farms and cities (construction) • reshape waterways • create new waterways (lakes etc) • Build dams • drain water and direct water to areas of need. (irrigation systems)

  18. Do Now • Review your notes.

  19. Answer the Essential Question How do forces of the earth cause geographic changes? You may use your notes and books.

  20. Ticket Out the Door • Name as many of the forces of the Earth as you can. There are 5. • Name three forces of the Earth that cause geographic changes. Explain how each force changes the earth.
