Origin • Inti Raymi is a day of celebration and prayer in which the people dance and pray for the return of the sun. • Inti Raymi is celebrated on the day of the Winter Solstice, June 24th. • Incans celebrated by congregating to the ancient city Cuzco and praying to their Sun God for the return of the sun. • It had been banned by Viceroy Toledo in 1572 because he saw it as being against the Catholic Religion.

  3. The New Version • It had recreated in the 1940’s based off of descriptions from first hand witness records. • Because June 24th is also a Christian holiday, it has been altered slightly to also celebrate St. John. • However, many parts of the old celebration remain. • They still celebrate by reenacting a battle, carrying in a chosen “emperor” guarded by members of the Peruvian army, and the relighting of the fires.

  4. Location • During Incan times Inti Raymi was celebrated in the ancient city of Cuzco in Peru, and still is today. It is also celebrated inside the archaeological complex of Sacsyhuaman.

  5. Night at Inti Raymi celebration Durring Inti Raymi, fires are left burning throughout the night of the 23rd. This is the longest night of their year.

Festivities • Throughout the celebration there are many festivities and performances. • It begins with a parade in which the chosen emperor is carried around and guarded by members of the Peruvian military. • Next is the performances of hundreds of dressed up performers who dance and reenact a battle.
