  1. Rita Levi-Montalcini Italian Neurobiologist (Turin 22/04/1909 - Rome 31/12/2012)

  2. She came from a Jewish family, her brother was the architect Gino and her sister was the painter Paola. R. L. Montalcini grew in the vivacious Turinese intellectual environment of the first postwar period.

  3. In 1936 she achieved the degree in medicine and surgery, then she began the studies on the nervous system that she would have developed with remarkable results along all her career of researcher.

  4. She moved to Belgium to attend a neurological laboratory in Bruxelles. After the beginning of the German occupation, following the armistice of 8 September 1943, between Italy and the Allies, Rita Levi Montalcini moved to Florence.

In 1946 she went to Washigton University in St. Louis, invited by the American embryologist Viktor Hamburger, who was doing some experiments on the differentiation of the nervous system on the embryos of chicken and there she did the most important work: isolating the nerve growth factor Embryosofchicken

  6. " The humanity is made of men and women and she must be represented by both the sexes. " Rita-Montalcinihas always affirmed to feel a free woman.

  7. Grown in "a Victorian world, in which the masculine figure was outstanding , women had few possibilities", she has declared resentfully.She has given up a husband and a family to entirely devote to science for choice.

  8. In relation to her own experience of woman in the scientific circle, she has always described the relationships with her assistants and the scientists as friendly and equal, asserting that women represent, on the same level as men, an immense reserve of potentiality
