  1. Mixtures and Solutions Lab Activity Your group will be designing a lab to determine the solubility of different substances, and what type of mixture that substance will make.

  2. Mixtures and Solutions….. • Obtain samples 3 of the following substances: sugar, flour, powdered drink, baking soda, instant coffee, powdered sugar, baby powder, laundry detergent. 2. Hypothesis – Which of the above substances will make a homogeneous solution? Which of the above substances will make a heterogeneous mixture?

  3. Mixtures and Solutions….. • Design a lab to determine which of the substances mixed in water form heterogeneous mixture and which form homogeneous solutions. You will also determine the amount of each substance required to make a saturated solution at room temperature. Materials Available – • Temperature Probe • Water • Beaker • Spoon • Stirring stick • Scale

  4. Mixtures and Solutions….. • Determine how much of each substance you can dissolve in samples of 100 ml of room temperature water. Add the substances a little bit at a time and keep track of the amount of each substance that dissolves in the water.

  5. Mixtures and Solutions….. • Using your knowledge of the properties of mixtures and solutions, determine which substances formed homogeneous solutions and which were heterogeneous mixtures. Which substances dissolved to the greatest extent. • Record what you observed about each mixture once it achieved saturation. • Set up a data table to record your results. • Make a graph showing the amount of each substance that dissolved in 100 mL of water.
