Skin Cancer and Health in Asia • In this task we have to find a health problem, choose 4 countries and compare them with this health problem. 1 of the countries must be your main country and we have to persuade the United Nations that my country needs more help. • Skin cancer is caused by sunburn and sunlight like the UV light. It damages your skin and it can lead to skin cancer.

Skin Cancer Chart • This is a chart of how many people get skin cancer per year in the 4 countries comparing to the population. • CountryFrequency (per year) • Bhutan 8,035/697,335 (1.15%) • Pakistan 585,280/169,708,300 (0.34%) • Sri Lanka 73,180/20,303,477 (0.36%) • India 3,915,700/1,155,347,700 (3.39%)

  4. Skin Cancer Graph I apologize that my graph is complicated and hard to understand because its impossible to compare a really small country like Bhutan to a huge country like India. There’s a big difference in the numbers that Bhutan doesn’t show in the graph. Almost triple the population of Qatar to get the number of people who get skin cancer in India per year.

  5. Explanation • The rate of skin cancer occurring in India is almost 9 times greater than the rate in Sri Lanka and Pakistan. • This is because in India the temperature at the hottest part of the day is 10 degrees Celsius higher on average than Sri Lanka and Pakistan. The higher the average temperature, the more likely it is that people will develop Malignant Melanoma which is the fastest growing of skin cancers. • Although the graph shows many more people suffering from skin cancer in Pakistan, the percentage of the population affected is almost identical to Sri Lanka.

  6. Conclusion • The need for skin cancer treatments in India is 9 times greater than in Sri Lanka and Pakistan and 3 times greater than Bhutan. • People in India earn very little money and can’t afford the expensive skin cancer operations. • Why should families lose members to one of the few cancers that can be treated? The population of India needs educating on how to prevent skin cancer.
